Widely hailed as "Upanyas Samrat", Munshi Premchand (born Dhanpat Rai Srivastava) is one of India's most revered writers in modern Hindustani literature. Precisely, he pioneered Hindi and Urdu social fiction and became a household name across the country during the 20th century. Sevasadan

Karmabhoomi

Set in Uttar Pradesh in the 1930s, 'Karmabhoomi' raises a voice against the exploitation of the poor masses by the privileged upper class. The novel, set in the fictional town of Karmabhoomi, follows a farmer named Saryu who struggles to make ends meet due to the exploitative practices of the landlords.

Nirmala

Published in 1928, 'Nirmala' was a novel way ahead of its time. The novel tells the story of a young girl who is forced to marry an elderly man. Through her journey, 'Nirmala' reflects how women are treated in the patriarchal society. It highlights numerous complex issues in India that are still prevalent today.

Gaban

'Gaban' tells the story of a young man who gets seduced by the lure of easy money, and further has to deal with the disastrous consequences of his actions. Published in 1931, the novel is a commentary on the negative influence of wealth on a person's moral principles. It gives a strong message that makes us introspect!

Godaan

Without an iota of doubt, 'Godaan' is the most celebrated work by Premchand. Published in 1936, the novel highlights the ongoing socio-economic inequality in rural India. It is set in a village and tells the story of a poor farmer who has to fight a plethora of obstacles to survive in the world.
