Year Ender 2025: A Recap of India's Peak Tennis Moments This Year

After a lengthy period of 32 years, India secured an away win on European soil

For the majority of Indian sports fans, 2025 was all about the ODI World Cup won by the Indian women’s cricket team and the Champions Trophy and Asia Cup lifted by the men’s team. While these achievements must be celebrated and recalled often, it is also true that India’s achievements in other sports have often remained in the shadow of cricket.

Hardly covered by major media outlets, noise on social media platforms, or celebrations on the streets, Indian tennis gave its best and won a few accolades but did not receive any recognition. As the year comes to an end, here’s a recap of Indian tennis achievements in 2025.

Yuki Bhambri on the rise

33-year-old Yuki Bhambri became only the sixth Indian to reach the semi-final stage of a Grand Slam in the Open Era. A specialist in doubles, Bhambri, along with his New Zealand partner Michael Venus, had a gruelling fight of 2 hours and 53 minutes against Britain’s Neal Skupski and Joe Salisbury. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, they went down 6(2)-7(7), 7(7)-6(5), 6-4.

Bhambri also reached a career-high ATP doubles ranking, making it to the top 25. In September, he achieved the rank of world no. 22. Not to forget, he also won the ATP 500 Dubai with partner Alexei Popyrin.

India’s men’s team in the historic Davis Cup defeated Switzerland by 3-1 in the World Group I tie held in Biel, Switzerland. This was India’s first victory on European soil in a lengthy period of 32 years. Notable performances came from players Sumit Nagal and Dhakshineswar Suresh, which helped the team advance to the Davis Cup 2026 Qualifiers.

21-year-old Vaishnavi Adkar from Pune also created history by winning a bronze medal at the 2025 Summer World University Games. She became the first woman to achieve this feat and only the second Indian after Nandan Bal, who won a medal in the competition in 1979. Adkar ended a medal drought that was 46 years long.

International exposure

India also gained immense international exposure by hosting multiple tournaments, such as ATP Challenger and WTA events like the Bengaluru Open, the L&T Mumbai Open, and so on.

Overall, 2025 was a decent year for India in the field of tennis, but the nation has a long way to go before it can call itself a dominant tennis country. Therefore, in 2026, we hope more achievements come India’s way, inspiring the nation to chant tennis stars’ names.
