Year Ender 2025: India at the World Boxing Championship, a Year With Two Major Gold Victories

Held in Liverpool, England, in September, four Indian women brought laurels for the nation

The Indian boxing scene in 2025 saw its share of success, including two gold medals at the World Boxing Championship in Liverpool, England. More than 500 boxers from over 60 countries participated in the tourney, and India grabbed two gold medals, one silver and one bronze in various categories, finishing third in the overall medal tally.

As the year comes to an end, here’s a recap of those matches and a shoutout to those boxers who put their lives at risk for their nation but do not get enough support, fortune, or fame like cricketers.

57kg category

In the 57kg category, 24-year-old Jasmine Lamboria grabbed a gold medal by defeating the top seed and Olympic medallist Julia Szeremeta of Poland. The 2024 Paris silver medallist got off to an aggressive start, but from the second round onward, Lamboria took advantage of her height and dictated the rest of the rounds to win by a split decision of 4-1.

Before reaching the final, Lamboria defeated Brazil’s two-time Olympian Jucielen Romeu and Ukraine’s Daria-Olha Hutarina in her opening bout, followed by a win against Uzbekistan’s Khumoranobu Mamajonova, and in the semi-final, she defeated Venezuela’s Paris Olympian Omailyn Alcala.

After the win, Jasmine had stated, “This feeling can't be expressed, I'm so happy to be a world champion. After my early exit at Paris 2024, I went away and improved my technique physically and mentally. This is the result of consistent work for a year,” as quoted by Olympics.com.

48 kg

Jasmine Lamboria wasn’t the only one to win a gold. In the 48 kg category, Minakshi Hooda defeated Nazym Kyzaibay, Kazakhstan’s Paris 2024 bronze medallist, by 4-1.

Two more medals

Apart from winning two gold medals, India also grabbed one silver and one bronze medal. Nupur Sheoran reached the final of the 80+kg category but lost to Agata Kaczmarska of Poland by a 3-2 split verdict, settling for silver.

Former champions

For the record, Nikhat Zareen and Lovlina Borgohain are former world champions of this tournament, but unfortunately, they crashed out in this edition. Zareen, in the 51kg category, lost the quarter-final at the hands of Türkiye’s two-time Olympic silver medallist Buse Naz Çakıroğlu, whereas Boroghain exited the 75 kg category in the second round.

As the world moves to 2026, we certainly hope the Indian boxing scenario will improve for the better and more medals will be added to the country’s cabinet.
