In 2016, the proposal for World Bee Day originated from the Slovenian government with support from the International Federation of Beekeepers' Associations (Apimondia). The United Nations Member States officially endorsed the day in 2017, and it was first observed in 2018.The designated theme for World Bee Day 2023 is "Bee engaged in pollinator-friendly agricultural production." This theme aims to promote worldwide initiatives in adopting agricultural practices that support pollinators. It emphasizes the importance of safeguarding bees and other pollinators through evidence-based approaches to agricultural production.
