Viral Story of the Day: Railway Ministry Reveals the Meaning of ‘X’ Symbol on Indian Train Coaches

Indian Railways is home to many people and millions of passengers travels through it everyday. If observed keenly, there are so many things that can be raise questions in our minds related to the train and the stations.

Indian railways has answered one such question today by telling the reason of having a huge ‘X’ symbol as the end of every train.

Taking to twitter, Ministry of Railways explained that the symbol signifies the end of the train and the fact that entire train has passed without leaving any coach behind.

The caption of the post read, “Did you Know? The letter ‘X’ on the last coach of the train denotes that the train has passed without any coaches being left behind.”

The post has amused so many twitter users as it has received more than 237K views and 4200 likes. Many users also commented on the post to share their reaction.

One user wrote what many of us have thought in out childhood, “And I used to think it meant to denote an Express train. A lot of passenger trains don't have this symbol at the end... Hence, I deduced the above.”

Other user wrote a hypothetical technical explanation, “I thought it's vector representation,  when a vector comes towards you it's denoted by dot (train's headlight), and if a vector going away from you it is denoted by X.”

A user names Pranaliwrite, "For this purpose we have LV board in day time and flasher light in night time to make it confirm that the last vehicle of the train is intact and no vehicle is left behind. We also have axel counters for the same purpose.”

Abhishek Kumar requested, “Thanks for the info. But there are lot many codes and letters used by Railways. I think letting us all know each of them every 2-3 days will be a great initiative.”
