IPL Recap: CSK's Top Individual Knocks That Went in Vain

Despite the high target of 227 runs, CSK's Suresh Raina displayed an extraordinary innings

Since 2008, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have unquestionably come to represent success in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Under the decisive leadership of MS Dhoni, CSK has an impressive record of winning five IPL titles, making them the most dominant side in the competition's history. Despite facing challenges, including a suspension due to a betting scandal, CSK's return to the IPL was spectacular, showcasing their resilience and determination.

While CSK's journey is studded with numerous triumphs, there have been instances where their players delivered exceptional performances but fell short of securing victory for their team. Let's delve into some memorable individual batting performances by CSK players in IPL matches where the team lost despite their outstanding efforts.

Suresh Raina, 87 vs KXIP, 2014

In a determined effort to win the second qualifier after two previous losses to Punjab in the season, CSK opted to bowl first. However, they faced a daunting challenge as Virender Sehwag unleashed a ferocious onslaught, scoring 122 runs. Despite the high target of 227 runs, CSK's Suresh Raina displayed an extraordinary innings. He began cautiously but quickly shifted gears, smashing boundaries at will. Raina's fifty came off just 16 balls, and he continued his onslaught, particularly against Parvinder Awana, whom he hammered for 33 runs in an over. Raina reached 87 off just 25 balls, with an astounding 84 runs from boundaries. Despite his heroic effort, CSK fell short by 24 runs, but Raina's remarkable innings, with a strike rate of 348, remains one of the finest in IPL history.

MS Dhoni, 84 vs RCB, 2019

Dhoni has a strong track record against RCB, and in his comeback game after injury, he won the toss and opted to field. RCB posted 161 runs, with Parthiv Patel scoring 53. CSK faced early setbacks, losing two wickets in the first over and slumping to 28/4. Dhoni's partnership with Rayudu rebuilt the innings, but hitting Chahal's leg spin and Stoinis' cutters proved challenging. With 36 runs needed off 12 balls, Dhoni launched a fierce assault. Surprisingly, he refused three singles, relying on his ability to finish games. Requiring 26 off the last over, Dhoni showcased his brilliance, smashing three sixes to bring it down to two runs off the last ball. However, he couldn't connect with the final delivery, and Parthiv's quick run-out denied CSK a win. Dhoni showcased his batting prowess in that match by scoring 84 runs off 48 balls, including five boundaries and seven sixes.

Gaikwad reached his century off 56 balls.

Ruturaj Gaikwad 108 vs. LSG, 2024

Ruturaj Gaikwad's remarkable century for Chennai Super Kings against Lucknow Super Giants was a standout performance in the IPL. Leading from the front as the CSK captain, Gaikwad smashed an unbeaten 108 runs at Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium. His innings were characterised by authoritative stroke play, as he struck 12 boundaries and three sixes. Remarkably, this was Gaikwad's second IPL century, solidifying his reputation as a formidable batsman in the tournament. Gaikwad's century also made him the franchise's first captain to achieve this milestone in the T20 league, reaching the landmark in just 56 balls, showcasing power-hitting ability and strategic innings construction. Despite his heroics, Lucknow Super Giants secured victory, chasing down Chennai's total of 210 runs with six wickets in hand.
