IPL Purple Cap: Teams Who Lead the Tally & Other Fun Facts

Two teams lead the tally with an equal number of purple caps won since 2008, but there’s a twist

In any tournament, the ultimate aim is to win the champion's trophy, so the story is no different for the Indian Premier League (IPL). For the 2026 season, teams are preparing to get their hands on the trophy and call themselves champions. However, there are also individual awards and records on the cards, and one of the most important awards in the IPL is the Purple Cap for the bowler who grabs the most wickets in an edition.

Ahead of the tournament’s first game, let us check out which teams lead the Purple Cap tally and a few other fun facts.

Maximum Purple Caps

The Chennai Super Kings have led the Purple Cap tally since 2008, with four wins from Dwayne Bravo (2), Mohit Sharma, and Imran Tahir. However, in our book of thoughts, we should consider Hyderabad as well, because the now-defunct Deccan Chargers won two caps, thanks to RP Singh and Pragyan Ojha, whereas Sunrisers Hyderabad also grabbed two caps due to Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s supremacy. Yes, the two teams are different, but they represent one city, so we don't see why Hyderabad shouldn't get credit.

Two Purple Caps

Moving on, several franchises have won two Purple Caps.

  • Gujarat Titans: Mohammed Shami and Prasidh Krishna.
  • Punjab Kings: Andrew Tye and Harshal Patel.
  • Delhi Capitals/Daredevils: Morne Morkel and Kagiso Rabada.
  • Rajasthan Royals: Sohail Tanvir and Yuzvendra Chahal.

Teams that have won the Purple Cap only once are the Mumbai Indians (Lasith Malinga) and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (Harshal Patel).

Fun Facts

Some fun facts you may not be aware of regarding the Purple Cap are:

  • Dwayne Bravo, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Harshal Patel have won the most purple caps, with two each.
  • In fact, Dwayne Bravo (2013) and Harshal Patel (2021) share the record with 32 wickets in a single season.
  • Since 2008, Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been the only bowler in the IPL's history to win the Purple Cap back-to-back.
  • Harshal Patel is the only player to have won the Purple Cap with two separate teams, once with the Punjab Kings and once with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

No Purple Cap for the purple team

Last but not least, do you know that despite having consistent bowling performers, the Knight Riders are the only IPL champions without a Purple Cap winner? Other champions, such as Chennai, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Jaipur, and Ahmedabad, have at least one Purple Cap winner, whether it's in the year they won their title or in another season. However, the Knight Riders, despite being three-time IPL champions, have never had a Purple Cap winner.
