On This Day (Apr. 2): Recalling India’s Top Performer in Every Game That Led to India’s World Cup Victory in 2011

On this day, April 2, 2011, the entire nation of India erupted in joy when Mahendra Singh Dhoni hit the winning six at the Wankhede Stadium, securing India’s ODI World Cup victory after a 28-year wait. As we celebrate the team’s success, let us do so by paying tribute to every performer who rose to the occasion in one match or another and helped the team move towards the trophy.

India vs. Bangladesh

India kicked off its campaign against Bangladesh by batting first, which saw Virender Sehwag score 175 runs in 140 balls, whereas a young Virat Kohli hit a hundred in 83 deliveries. Munaf Patel from the bowling unit took four wickets, which prevented Bangladesh’s lower order from mounting a comeback, leading to India's victory by 87 runs.

India vs. England

In the subsequent match, India faced England, with Sachin Tendulkar's 120 runs easing the pressure on the other batters. Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh contributed with 51 and 58 runs, respectively, whereas with the ball, Zaheer Khan grabbed three wickets that ensured a tie between the two equally matched sides.

India vs. Netherlands

The third group stage match saw India take on the Netherlands, who were stopped at 189 runs, thanks to three wickets from Zaheer Khan and two each from Piyush Chawla and Yuvraj Singh. During the chase, Yuvraj Singh made the most runs for India, i.e., 51 runs, and India won by five wickets.

India vs. West Indies

Yuvraj Singh once again demonstrated his prowess against the West Indies, scoring 113 runs in the final group stage match. Zaheer Khan’s three wickets, followed by two wickets each by Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuvraj Singh, halted the Indies at 189 runs.

India vs. Australia

In the quarterfinal, India clashed against Australia, who set a target of 260 runs as the bowlers struggled to contain Ricky Ponting, who scored a century. However, the Indian batters collectively scored 53, 50, and 57 runs, respectively, from Tendulkar, Gambhir, and Singh, who played crucial roles in saving the day and helping India reach the semi-final.

India vs. PAK

India’s arch-rival PAK had reached the semi-final, but Tendulkar put them in their place with 85 runs, whereas Suresh Raina in the lower order added 36 crucial runs that helped India post 260 on the board. India’s bowling unit, which included Ashish Nehra, Munaf Patel, Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh, and Zaheen Khan, all picked five wickets each to dismantle PAK at 231 runs.

India vs. Sri Lanka

In the final, Sri Lanka put on a brilliant performance that left the Indian bowlers baffled. Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene scored 48 and 103 runs, respectively, helping Sri Lanka set a target of 274. In response, India had a wobbly start, but then came Gambhir, who played a composed 97-run inning, whereas on the other end, Dhoni added 91 runs and ensured India’s victory.
