Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) needs a major overhaul in its starting XI
Despite scoring 220 runs in the opening game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, KKR failed to defend the target, thanks to its bowling, which is missing several players due to injuries and miscommunication. The team’s next game is at the Eden Gardens in front of the home crowd but against a formidable Sunrisers Hyderabad group that scores anywhere above 250 runs at will.
So, what does KKR need to do at this earliest stage to ensure it doesn’t finish at the bottom of the table? Honestly, we don't anticipate the team making it to the playoffs, but we believe that certain changes could enable the team to secure a mid-table finish.
Change the top order
🚨 MASSIVE STATEMENT BY FINN ALLEN ON IPL 🚨
— Fan Account Richard Kettlebourogh (@RichKettle07) March 29, 2026
Finn Allen said - “I was waiting for this moment from a long time. Finally playing in the biggest T20 Tournament in the world. IPL is the best in terms of quality, fans and everything.”#MIvsKKR pic.twitter.com/dYFTvQwLfZ
It is a known fact that Finn Allen and Tim Seifert have a decent partnership in India, and yet, accommodating Ajinkya Rahane has become a thing. Narine is no longer as effective as before; therefore, he must be allowed to use his power-hitting skills in the power-play zone. Rahane simply doesn’t fit in the fast-paced world of T20, and even though he hit 44 off 21 balls in the first game, slowing down to 67 off 40 is not acceptable.
Troublesome middle order
🚨 IAN BISHOP ON ANGKRISH RAGHUVANSHI DURING MI VS KKR

Ian Bishop 🎙️ - The way India is recruiting and grooming young cricketers, it wouldn't be wrong to say they’ll dominate cricket for the next 50 years
Raghuvanshi played such a composed Inning👏🏼pic.twitter.com/m7bBeSwHNU
Angkrish Raghuvanshi also needs to reach the pitch before Cameron Green, as Green usually plays at No. 4. In our opinion, the order should be Narine and Seifert opening, followed by Allen, Raghuvanshi, Green and Rahane in the middle order. To be honest, fitting Rahane anywhere is problematic because Rahul Tripathi, as an impact player, could do better, or where does Rinku Singh fit if Rahane comes in at sixth? In fact, if Rahane needs to be accommodated and Green is not available for bowling, he is better off warming the bench.
Bowling overhaul
We are well aware that Green is prohibited from bowling, which is an unsolvable issue. Blessing is no blessing for the team, whereas Vaibhav Arora often gives away close to 40 runs. Given that Varun is also out of form and Narine is no longer the mystery bowler, it is down to Kartik Tyagi, who needs more grooming, and Anukul Roy also needs to be used correctly.
🚨 What a breathtaking match! 🔥🤯

•Kartik Tyagi defended just 12 runs brilliantly. What an outstanding last over he bowled! On the final ball, 3 runs were needed off 1 ball, but while trying to take two runs, Rahul Tripathi got run out, and the Golden Knights won the match. pic.twitter.com/RMPxg4RBle
For example, the latter was not used when Rohit Sharma and Rickelton were batting, but it could have affected the two by potentially taking wickets or restricting runs during a crucial phase of the match. At this point, maybe the only bowler who can do something positive for the KKR is Pathirana, but he alone won’t solve every KKR problem.
