Decode the Heat: Summer Symptoms You Shouldn't Ignore

From sweat to serious: spot the signs of a summer health crisis.

More than just a tan, summer in India can bring scorching temperatures that often go beyond discomfort. With rising temperatures, health risks increase—especially when we mistake heat-related symptoms for routine tiredness or dehydration. Knowing how to spot early warning signs could be a lifesaver. This guide will help you decode common summer symptoms to stay safe all season long.

Unusual Fatigue Isn’t Just Exhaustion

Heat exhaustion symptoms in India often start with extreme tiredness. Low blood pressure, lack of energy and dizziness may indicate extreme dehydration or heatstroke.

What to watch:

Muscle cramps

Headaches

Pale or clammy skin

Rapid but weak pulse

Pro tip: Sip on ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution), rest in a shaded place, and avoid direct sunlight during 11 am to 4 pm.

Nausea and Vomiting? Heatstroke May Be Knocking

Never Don’t ignore the queasy feeling. Nausea, vomiting, associated with stomach discomfort are early signs of heatstroke. Remember, it can strike suddenly. This can happen to outdoor workers, children playing in the sun, elderly people with a previous history of health complications.

Avoid spicy or oily food in peak summer. Go for light, cooling meals like curd rice, fruit salads, lemon water, and coconut water.

Skin Redness, Rashes, or Prickly Heat

Summer heat brings a wide range of skin issues. If you notice any redness, small blisters, or constant itching, it could be heat rash (also known as prickly heat).

Best protection plan:

Wear loose, cotton clothes

Avoid synthetic fabrics

Bathe twice daily with neem or sandalwood soap

Apply soothing aloe vera gel daily

Children are generally more prone to these rashes due to outdoor exposure.

High Body Temperature Without Sweating

This is a dangerous sign, which is overlooked in extreme heat. Your body’s cooling system may be shutting down due to dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, prolonged exposure to hot weather.

Immediate action:

Move to a cool space

Sponge bath with icy cold water

Seek medical help if temperature remains very high

Thirst That Doesn’t Go Away

Are you feeling constantly thirsty despite drinking water frequently? Your body might be signalling heat dehydration, which could cause kidney issues or low blood pressure.

Smart hydration hacks:

Infuse water with mint, lemon, or cucumber

Drink buttermilk or chaas

Avoid excess caffeine and carbonated drinks

Pro tip: If your urine turns dark yellow or amber colour, it's time to increase your water intake.

Mental Fog or Confusion? A Medical Emergency

One of the most serious symptoms of heatstroke is confusion, irritability, or fainting. When the ambient temperature crosses the brain’s threshold, cognitive functions drop rapidly. Watch out for the symptoms like slurred speech, disorientation, unsteady walking, and fainting spells

Don't delay: Take the person to a hospital immediately as brain damage or even death can occur if heatstroke is left untreated.

India's summer is intense—and it’s only getting hotter every year. Air conditioners and cool drinks offer temporary relief, it’s your awareness that can truly protect you.
