Best in both Western music and Hindustani classical, Sami often blends the two into soulful fusions. Born in Pakistan on August 15, Adnan Sami began his musical journey with English songs, making his debut hit with ‘Run For His Life’, recorded for UNICEF. Since then, he has given us countless chart-toppers. And here’s an interesting fact- this gifted artist is hailed as the World’s Fastest Keyboard Player. Let’s explore this remarkable facet of his life.

“World’s Fastest Keyboard Player” and his illustrious journey

Adnan Sami has been playing the piano since the age of five and composed his first piece of music at just nine. During school vacations in India, he trained in Indian classical music under the legendary santoor maestro Pandit Shivkumar Sharma. At the age of ten, Indian playback icon Asha Bhosle saw him at an R.D. Burman concert in London and encouraged him to pursue music professionally.

Sami is credited as the first musician to adapt Indian classical music to the piano, creating a unique style inspired by the santoor. A true multi-instrumentalist, he can play over 35 instruments and has mastery over Indian and Western classical, semi-classical, jazz, rock, and pop. As a teenager, his piano performance on a TV program in Stockholm earned him praise from ‘Keyboard’ magazine in the U.S., which hailed him as “the fastest man on the keyboard” and “the keyboard discovery of the nineties.”

At just sixteen, he was invited to compose a song for famine-stricken Ethiopia, a project that earned him a special award from UNICEF, marking the beginning of a remarkable career. Over the decades, Sami has composed and sung numerous iconic hits, winning multiple awards, including the prestigious Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honour. ‘The Times of India’ has called him the ‘Sultan of Music.’

In his illustrious 32-year career, Sami has received international honours such as the Nigar Award, Bolan Academy Award, and Graduate Award. He is also the youngest recipient of the Naushad Music Award for Excellence in Music, previously bestowed upon legends like Lata Mangeshkar and Khayyam. His journey is truly a source of immense pride.
