A Promise Kept: PSG Ultras Boo Messi During PSG’s Loss Against Rennes

For the record, the PSG Ultra fans made a promise to boo Lionel Messi after PSG crashed out of the UCL.

A promise made is a promise kept; PSG Ultra fans booed Lionel Messi yesterday after PSG lost a Ligue 1 game against Stade Rennes by two goals. For the record, last week, the PSG Ultras announced that they would boo Messi because PSG crashed out of the UEFA Champions League after suffering humiliating defeats at the hands of Bayern Munich.

The group had said, "We will whistle at Messi this Sunday. He has too high a salary in relation to what he offers on the pitch."

Boos and whistles

Yesterday, the fans did not boo Messi when his name was announced prior to the game. However, the Ultras started booing and whistling the moment PSG conceded its first goal in the 45th minute.

A majority of PSG fans are heavily upset with Lionel Messi, who has failed to lead the team in the Champions League since he joined the Paris-based club from Barcelona. Furthermore, Messi’s contract situation has also made the fans angry, who believe that the World Cup winner is not giving his best for the club despite earning a whopping amount every year.

Campos’ statement

However, PSG’s director Luis Campos has made it clear that the club is still talking to Messi about a potential contract extension.

"At the moment, we are in discussions with Messi for his extension. I would like to keep him in this project, I can’t hide it. We are talking at the moment to achieve this goal, and continue to have him with us," he told Telefoot.
