Things to Know About India's First EV Friendly Highway

To simplify the concerns of electric vehicles users, the government of India has enhanced the Delhi-Chandigarh highway by adding solar-based electric vehicle charging stations

The government of India has been working vigorously to turn the country into a major electric vehicles’ nation as soon as possible. Therefore, in recent times, it has not only encouraged Indian vehicle manufacturers to produce electric vehicles, but has also welcomed Tesla and other foreign companies to establish an electric vehicle ecosystem in the country. Not to forget, under the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric vehicle (FAME) scheme, the government has allocated a mammoth budget based on which a patron can avail huge concessions and other offers on the acquisition of an electric vehicle. Not to forget, the FAME scheme is also directed to build an electric vehicles’ ecosystem in the nation.

Now, under the FAME scheme, the government has spun a conventional highway into India’s first-ever electric vehicle friendly highway. Developed by state-run firm Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), the highway has been upgraded to a network of Solar-based Electric Vehicle Charging stations (SEVCs). These chargers have been installed at a regular interval of 25-30 kilometres because of which, travelling inter-city in an electric vehicle will be a piece of cake. Users will no longer have to worry about running out of juice in the midst of the interstate.

Out of many chargers, one charger has been equipped at the Karnal lake resort, which is the middle point between Delhi and Chandigarh. From Delhi to Chandigarh, the distance is around 250 kilometres. With so many chargers installed, travelling between these two cities in an EV should not be an ordeal anymore.

About the inauguration ceremony, Dr Mahendra Nath Pandey, the Union Heavy Industries Minister, was present at Karnal lake resort and the charging station was inaugurated by him. After introducing the station, Pandey said, “The Honourable PM has clearly highlighted that environment security has the same importance as national security and that India is making all efforts towards becoming energy independent.” Apart from him, other eminent personalities such as Dr Nalin Shinghal, the Chairman & Managing Director of BHEL, and Arun Goel, who is the Secretary of the Union Minister of Heavy Industries were present during the inauguration.

Last but not least, some of the efficient electric vehicles one should check in India are Ola Electric scooters, Simple Energy One, Tata Nexon EV, and MG ZS EV.
