Powering Progress: Importance of Semiconductor on Society as Tesla Signs Deal with Tata Electronics for Semicon Tech

Believe it or not, our daily lives are dependent on semiconductors majorly.

Globally, semiconductor industry is expected to touch a trillion-dollar industry by end of this decade. India is not behind to capture the booming market, as Tata Electronics has signed a deal with Tesla for semiconductor technology supply. This deal comes amidst Elon Musk’s scheduled visit to India this month. As part of strategic partnership, Tata Electronics will be supporting Tesla in its semiconductor chip global operations.

You may think, why everyone is talking about semiconductor technology so much? To get the answer, you have to understand the importance of semiconductor on society.

In this article, we will discuss how semiconductor is playing a key role in our everyday lives.

What is Semiconductor?

A semiconductor is a material capable of controlling electrical currents, thus making an essential component of majority of modern electronic appliances.

Semiconductor in Computing:

We cannot think our lives without laptop or desktop. For a computer, microprocessors, memory, and graphic processing units (GPUs) are the most common examples of semiconductors. Broadly, semiconductor help your computer run smoothly, by protecting your battery. It prevents the whole system from burning up. Generally, based on the type of chip, semiconductor uses a binary code to direct the user's commands, whether to launch a program or save a document.

Semiconductor in Household Appliances:

From air conditioner to washing machine, microwave to refrigerator, important home appliances need semiconductor for automated features, temperature control, and so on. Nowadays, we are using WiFi e enabled, multifunctional devices, where semiconductor plays an important part. Another wonderful use of semiconductor is energy efficient LED bulbs.

Semiconductor in Telecommunication:

We cannot talk much about the importance of telecommunication in our daily lives. Gone are those days for sending letters, now we can talk to a person sitting thousands of kilometres away in real time. This wouldn't be possible without advancement in telecommunication. From display, battery use, to navigation and 4G/5G reception, everything is controlled by semiconductor chips in your smartphone.

Semiconductor in Banking Sector:

From digital computing, ATM machines, to cloud platforms, semiconductors are used in high-tech banking services globally. Even, automated locking mechanisms are supported by semiconductor technology. This helps securing customer’s personal information too.

Semiconductor in Security:

Every digital technology is getting benefitted from semiconductors largely. The microchips are playing important role in security domain. Nowadays, cybersecurity awareness is a must for all. Semiconductor is helping in securing personal to national threats. In security camera, semiconductor chips are allowing threat movement detection and faster alerts.

Semiconductor in Healthcare:

From early detection of disease to complex surgery, semiconductor plays a crucial role in healthcare sector. Advanced technologies like MRI, CT scan to devices like pacemaker, semiconductor is revolutionizing health care domain with multiple functionalities. We are living in the era of telemedicine, which is supported by semiconductors.

Semiconductor in Transportation:

Safety is the utmost thing being in the road. From two-wheelers to four-wheelers, buses to trains, semiconductors are used in various services like free Wi-Fi, GPS, traffic signal, and so on. For a sustainable future, we are relying on electric vehicles, which are using semiconductors to enhance efficiency.

In such a broad way, semiconductor is shaping our day-to-day lives. Regarding the latest deal between Tesla and Tata Electronics, a report mentioned: “Executed discreetly a few months ago, this agreement is noteworthy as it positions Tata Electronics as a dependable supplier for prominent global clients aiming to establish a crucial segment of their semiconductor value chain in India.”

It's because of semiconductor, we are hoping for a better and advanced future ahead.
