Classic Legends: The Mahindra Owned Firm Behind Jawa, BSA and Yezdi

The brand has successfully revived iconic motorcycle firms such as Jawa and BSA. In the years to come, the Mahindra-owned company is also looking forward to reviving Czech brand Yezdi Go back 30 years or 40 years from 2021; the Indian streets were not filled with Pulsars, Dukes and FZs. In that era, India had Jawas, Yezdis, Royal Enfields and a few models from brands such as Yamaha, Honda and Suzuki. However, several reasons led to the demise of Jawa and Yezdi. The firms did not merely disappear from India but also ceased all the operations, bringing their legacies to a full stop. On the other hand, British motorcycle manufacturer BSA also ended its operations. The world thought that was the end of the iconic brands, but in 2016, entered Classic Legends Private Limited; a company whose 60 per cent stake is in the name of Anand Mahindra. In 2016, the M&M subsidiary acquired the stakes of BSA and Jawa, along with Yezdi. Note that Yezdi was sold in India under the brand of Jawa or Ideal Jawa back in the 60s and 70s. Now, all three brands are being controlled by Pune-based Classic Legends. Classic Legends has several directors, such as Anand Gopal Mahindra, Naveen Kumar Kshatriya, Punita Kumar Sinha, to name a few. The founder of the company is Anupam Thareja and the CEO of the company is Ashish Joshi; two other individuals who own the remaining stakes of the Pune-based automobile company. On November 15, 2018, Jawa officially launched the Jawa and JawaForty Two motorcycles in the Indian market. Not to forget, the company also unveiled a bobber style Jawa by the name Perak in the country. After enjoying the success of Jawa models, M&M’s Classic Legends resurrected the British motorcycle manufacturer BSA in the month of December 2021. The brand launched its first motorcycle in over 40 years by the name Gold Star; a 650cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled motorcycle that is tuned to produce a peak power of 45hp at 4,000rpm and a maximum torque of 55Nm at 6,000rpm mated to a five-speed gearbox. The motorcycle is likely to compete with other motorcycles in the 650cc segment. However, as of now, we do not know if it will reach the Indian shores. Last but not the least, Classic Legends is also set to relaunch the Yezdi brand in India with three new motorcycles;Yezdi 300, Roadking Scrambler and Adventure.
