Breaking Boundaries: Successful IIM Graduates Who Followed Passion as 3 IIMs in Top 500 QS Rankings

In the recently published QS rankings, three Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) have placed within top 50 globally.

Every year, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) publish rankings of global universities by subject. In 2024 ranking, the Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta showed significant improvement in business and management studies. A total of 69 Indian institutions featured in the top 500 list, with an astonishing growth of 19.4% since the last year. In Asia, India is ranked second with 69 entries followed by China (101).

QS CEO Jessica Turner mentioned: “One of the biggest challenges faced by India is educational – providing high-quality tertiary education in the face of exploding demand.”

There is a conventional thinking that, graduates of IIMs become the CEOs of big companies. However, the trend has been changing over the years. Many talented IIM graduates reject big offers to follow their passion.

With such an excellent success of IIMs in QS rankings, in this article, we have compiled a list of some IIM graduates who followed their passion.

Harsha Bhogle (IIM-A) - Commentator and Journalist:

What if I tell you that our favourite cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle is originally an IIM alumni. Although he completed B.Tech in Chemical Engineering and management degree from IIM Ahmedabad, he never followed the path of traditional career. Instead, his love for cricket eventually made him a commentator as well as journalist. Harsha Bhogle was the first Indian commentator to be invited by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

Chetan Bhagat (IIM-A) - Author:

Leaving a high-salaried job to become an author is not everyone’s cup of tea. But, there is a famous Indian author who left an esteemed job as investment banker in Goldman Sachs and focused on writing. Eventually, he gave some of the best Selling books like Five Point Someone (2004), 2 States (2009), Revolution 2020 (2011), and so on. Amish Tripathi (IIM-C) - Novelist:

Have you gone through Shiva trilogy? The author, Amish Tripathi is actually an IIM Calcutta alumni. The novels like ‘Immortals of Meluha’, ‘Secret of the Nagas’ were an instant bestseller. For his achievement, Amish Tripathi was mentioned in the top 100 celebrities in India for four consecutive years (2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015). Before becoming a novelist, after completing his MBA from IIM Calcutta, he served 14 years in financial services industry.

Rashmi Bansal (IIM-A) - Non-fiction Writer:

Do you want to get business education? Do go through books like ‘Stay Hungry Stay Foolish’, ‘I Have a Dream’, ‘Connect the Dots’, and ‘Poor Little Rich Slum’. The author of these books is non other than Rashmi Bansal, a graduate of IIM Ahmedabad.

Mallika Sarabhai (IIM-A) - Dancer:

We have come across IIM graduates excelling in writing, journalism, but we are going to talk about another art form dance. Mallika Sarabhai, an IIM Ahmedabad alumni choose her passion dance as career. She is a bharata natyam and kuchipudi dancer who also ventured into acting. She has also participated in Gujarat state election.

Salil Shetty (IIM-A) - Social Activist:

There are few people who choose uplifting the society as career. The human rights activist Salil Shetty is an IIM Ahmedabad alumni who started his career in IT sector. However, he understood the need of underprivileged people and was got the responsibility to supervise the United Nations Millennium Campaign during 2003 - 2010.
