Beyond Rasgulla: Lesser-Known Bengali Sweets Worth Trying

A Bengali meal is never complete without having sweets (“mishti”, as they call it) at the end. On the other hand, these sweets play an integral part in certain occasions or festivals throughout the year. Now, when we talk about those delicious sweets, Rasgulla, Sandesh, and Mishti Doi come atop the list, all the time. Even the non-Bengalis who visit West Bengal find it hard to choose anything over these particular items. So, without any further ado, let’s have a look at some of the mouth-watering Bengali sweets beyond those popular ones.

Rajbhog

Rajbhog is a modified version of the Rasgulla. These soft cheese balls (stuffed with dry fruits and flavored with kesar) dipped in syrups are mouth-melting in the truest sense of the term.

Rasmalai

Rasmalai, a widely beloved sweet item, is made of various ingredients such as sugar syrup, milk, kheer, saffron, pistachios, cardamom, etc. The dish includes small chenna balls drenched in milk cream.

Pantuwa

Pantuwa is a traditional Bengali sweet resembling a lot like the Gulab Jamun. These are deeply fried cottage cheese balls soaked in sugar syrups. The dish, with the abundance of juice along with the brown-red color, seems very attractive to sweet lovers.

Langcha

Langcha, although it differs in size, tastes quite similar to Pantuwa. The dish is prepared using flour, khoya, ghee, and sugar syrup. You can find the best Langchas at Shaktigarh in Burdwan district, West Bengal.

Kheer Kadam

Kheer Kadam, also referred to as the Ras Kadam, offers two layers of taste to your tongue. This is made of a dry, small Rasgulla wrapped in Kheer and powdered sugar.

Chomchom

Chomchom is another heavenly sweet that comes in a variety of forms. The dish is usually prepared with ingredients such as flour, sugar, cream, coconut, saffron, etc. The Malai Chomchom is the most preferred type of Chomchom in Bengal.

Rabri

Rabri is something that you can never get enough of. The dish is prepared using condensed milk and garnished with nuts and dry fruits. It is healthy and quite filling for your appetite.

Sar Bhaja

Sar Bhaja, commonly pronounced as Shor Bhaja, is a unique dessert that literally transports you to another world. The dish is basically deep-fried milk cream soaked in sugar syrup. It comes with a slightly crispy taste. The best Sar Bhaja can be found at Krishna Nagar in Nadia district, West Bengal.

Some other popular Bengali sweet items are Amriti, Moa, Kacha Golla, Kalo Jam, Kalakand, Labong Latika, Mihidana, Sitabhog, Patishapta, Malpua, etc.
