Young Talents Continue their Run in Indiana Wells as Alcaraz and Gauff Progress to the Quarters

Carlos Alcaraz, ranked No. 2, won after Jack Draper withdrew with the spanish ace having a 6-2, 2-0 advantage. It was Alcaraz's 101st triumph on the ATP Tour.

Carlos Alcaraz can now reclaim the top spot at the ATP rankings if he wins his next three matches, that is, if he went on to win the BNP Paribas Open.

Statement from Alacaraz after the Victory

“I would say I returned well, I hit great shots,” Alcaraz said. “I finished the match with confidence in my shots, to come into the next round with more confidence.”

Draper was hampered by a stomach injury that developed after his victory over Andy Murray the day before.

Win for Gauff and Kvitova

Meanwhile, Coco Gauff and Petra Kvitova also cruised through to the quarters of the BNP Paribas Open.

Gauff beat beat Swedish qualifier Rebecca Peterson, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4. Four years ago, Peterson had beaten the-then 14 years old Gauff.

“She whopped me really bad,” Gauff said on court. “I think today was really a mental thing, just staying in the match. I wasn’t playing my best in some moments and I wasn’t serving as well as I’d like to, but I think that my mentality kept me in.”

15th seeded Petra defeated the 3rd seeded Jessica Pegulo 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (11).

“When the match like this, very exhausting,” Kvitova said about the game. “Up and down. Definitely it’s one of the best matches I’ve played.”
