The Men in Blue are in contention to win their third ICC T20 World Cup trophy, having won their first in 2007 under captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. India witnessed 14 years of trophy drought but finally lifted their second trophy in 2024 under skipper Rohit Sharma. With a team of superstars and going into the tournament as the defending champions, India has the opportunity to increase the trophy count to three.

West Indies

Known for their T20 prowess, the West Indies have also won the ICC T20 World Cup on different occasions, i.e., 2010 and 2016. The West Indies are hungry for this year’s trophy, given that T20I is the only format where they have any real impact. Unlike in yesteryear, when the Indies were a powerful Test and ODI side, internal politics and several other reasons have left Indies cricket in a poor state. Therefore, the team are highly determined to get their hands on the trophy, which will ensure that cricket remains relevant in their region and they remain relevant in the world of cricket.

England

England is the third team to have won the ICC T20 World Cup twice. Their first win was in 2010 when they defeated Australia at Bridgetown, followed by their second victory in 2022 against PAK. When England became the champions in 2022, they became the first country ever to own the T20 World Cup and ODI World Cup at the same time, given they had won the 2019 ODI World Cup. Under Brendon McCullum’s mentorship, England has learned the art of hitting big from the get-go, just like McCullum did when he was a player. Therefore, England also has the chance to lift the trophy.

For the record, India is expected to top the group and proceed to the Super 8. However, the same cannot be said for the West Indies. Given that England and the Indies are in the same group, England is expected to top the group because England seems to be in a stronger position than the Indies. For the Indies, it is imperative that they win against Italy, Scotland, and Nepal. One slip-up and Nepal, a team with potential, could move to the Super 8, cutting short the chances of the Indies a little too early.
