Side effects of eating too many apples

Too much of anything is bad for your health, including apples.

The saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” is true as the fruit is loaded with nutrients including fibre, potassium and vitamin C. These nutrients contribute towards maintaining our health. However, if you are consuming too many apples every day, it can lead to serious side effects.

Here is a list of side effects of apples you need to watch out for.

  • Digestive distress
While fibre can help improve your digestive health, eating too much of it can lead to digestive problems like constipation and bloating. Depending on age and gender, a person needs between 20 to 40 grams of fibre every day. Consuming more than 70 grams of fibre is going overboard, which would happen if you eat 15 apples every day. But you also need to be mindful of other fibre sources in your diet.
  • Fluctuation in blood sugar levels
Rich in carbohydrates, apples provide a burst of energy making it the perfect pre-workout snack. But consuming too many apples can also lead to a spike in blood sugar. This is worse for diabetic people, as too much sugar even from fruits can interfere with their medication and also worsen insulin sensitivity.
  • Cause damage to teeth
Having too many apples can damage your teeth due to their acidic nature. However, you can prevent it by eating apples as a snack with your meal or eating it with your back teeth.
  • Can lead to weight gain
Since apples are rich in carbs, having too much of it can lead to weight gain. Since the body dives in your carb collection to first for burning, too many apples will restrict your body from burning any fat, which can lead to weight gain.
  • Intake of too many harmful pesticides
Diphenylamine is the most common pesticide found in apples. Also, apples have the highest amount of pesticide residue among other fruits and vegetables. Therefore, consuming too many apples can lead to an intake of too many chemicals.

All these side effects will occur if you are going overboard with eating apples. Having one or two every day will not lead to any of these side effects. Also, it is recommended that the best time to eat an apple is in the morning and should be consumed with the skin to reap its maximum benefits.

If you experience any of these side effects, consult your doctor or physician.
