One of the world's most popular beverages, Coca-Cola was invented on May 8, 1886. But did you know it was a mere accidental invention?

The Accidental Invention Of Coca-Cola

There have been numerous accidental inventions throughout history, and Coca-Cola comes atop the list.

During the late 19th century, an American pharmacist named John Pemberton was experimenting to create a headache cure and general pain reliever. He had a medical degree and worked as a druggist in Columbus before joining the Confederate army during the Civil War. He was seriously injured in the war and became addicted to morphine to control his body's pain.

Pemberton settled in Atlanta after the war and started working on a beverage (consisting of coca leaves and cola nuts) that would provide instant relief from pain. He came up with a beverage (made using extracts of cola nut and damiana) accidentally which he described as “a valuable brain tonic that would cure headaches, relieve exhaustion, and calm nerves”. He called the product “Pemberton’s French Wine Coca”, and marketed it as "delicious, refreshing, pure joy, exhilarating, and invigorating".

The beverage was an instant success in the market but there were concerns about its alcohol content. While trying to make it non-alcoholic, Pemberton blended the base syrup with carbonated water, and voila, the end result was absolutely outstanding! It was May 8, 1886, and that's how Coca-Cola was invented.

This time, he decided to market it as a fountain drink instead of a medicine. He sold the rights to Coca-Cola to Asa Griggs Candler who made it one of the world's most valuable brands.

Coca-Cola: Some Interesting Facts

The name Coca-Cola comes from its two original ingredients: coca leaves and kola nuts.

The current recipe of Coca-Cola is a trade secret, known only by select employees.

From July 1985 to 2009, Coca-Cola was called Coca-Cola Classic to distinguish it from "New Coke".

Coca-Cola became a symbol of American imperialism, and so, a non-American to be seen drinking it was quite problematic during World War II. Hence, the company made a special “White Coke” to solve the issue.

There are now so many different varieties of Coca-Cola that if you drink one per day, it would take you over nine years to try them all.
