On This Day - Arthur Conan Doyle's Birth Anniversary: The Indian Fictional Detectives Inspired by Sherlock Holmes

Holmes has been a significant figure in pop culture for over a hundred years.

Sherlock Holmes is a character that we cannot help but be obsessed with! Thanks to Arthur Conan Doyle's great vision (and of course, his poignant writing style), the character holds the same appeal that he had back in the 19th century. Without an iota of doubt, Holmes is the most popular figure in the field of crime fiction.

Holmes is a fictional detective who is well-known for his sharp mind, analytical skills, and observation power. The character first appeared in Doyle's short story 'A Study in Scarlet' in 1887 and became everyone's favorite almost instantly. As Doyle said during an interview in 1927, "People were convinced he was a living human being. I got letters where they blessed him, asking for his autograph…I even had ladies writing to say they would gladly act as his housekeeper."

Over the years, several Indian writers have created fictional detectives based on the characteristics of Sherlock Holmes. Today, on Arthur Conan Doyle's birth anniversary, let's have a look at some of them in this article.

Feluda by Satyajit Ray

Created by Satyajit Ray, Feluda (also known as Prodosh Chandra Mitra) is a fictional private detective based in Kolkata. Feluda is heavily inspired by Holmes, and in one of the stories (‘London e Feluda’), he even pays tribute to Holmes at 221B Baker Street, London.

Byomkesh Bakshi by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay

Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay's iconic literary creation Byomkesh Bakshi is thought to be inspired by Sherlock Holmes. The Bengali sleuth, however, is very different in his way of solving cases. There are 32 stories based on Bakshi.

Sherlock Holmes Namboothiri by G Sreekumar

Sherlock Holmes Namboothiri is a fictional detective based in Kerala. Created by G Sreekumar, the character has several traits of Holmes, but in the Malayali style.

Speaking about this character, Sreekumar said in an interview, "I have done a lot of research, looking for a detective with the abilities of Holmes, there are none. That is when I thought of creating one."
