The stage was set, the anticipation palpable, as Brendon McCullum stepped onto the field alongside his captain, Sourav Ganguly, for KKR in the inaugural match of the IPL

Let's take a stroll down memory lane to the electrifying year of 2008, where cricket enthusiasts were treated to an extravaganza unlike any other. The stage was set for the grand unveiling of the Indian Premier League (IPL), marking a monumental shift in the cricketing landscape.

We had all been waiting for - the first match of the IPL's inaugural season. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) clashed with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the iconic M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.

Little did we know, this match would go down in history as one of the most exhilarating encounters ever witnessed in T20 cricket. So, as we commemorate the 16th anniversary of that monumental day when the IPL first burst onto the scene, let's take a moment to relive the magic and mayhem that ensued.

Brendon McCullum showcased his explosive batting by smashing a boundary on the leg side during his blistering innings of 158 in the inaugural match of the Indian Premier League in 2008

McCullum’s blitzkrieg innings

What a jaw-dropping start it was indeed! The stage was set, the anticipation palpable, as Brendon McCullum stepped onto the field alongside his captain, Sourav Ganguly, for KKR in the inaugural match of the IPL.

McCullum's blitzkrieg was nothing short of legendary, as he unleashed an onslaught of boundaries and sixes, leaving the opposition shell-shocked. His unbeaten 158 off just 73 balls rewrote the record books and set a new benchmark for T20 cricket. With a breathtaking display of power-hitting, McCullum treated the crowd to a spectacle they wouldn't soon forget, notching up ten fours and a staggering 13 sixes at a mind-boggling strike rate of 216.43.

McCullum’s statement about the inning

McCullum, ultimately becoming one of New Zealand’s most successful captains, disclosed how that singular innings transformed his entire life to kkr.in.

“You talk about sliding doors, and moments in your careers and in lives. That night, my life changed completely in the space of those three hours or actually, even an hour and a half. Why was I the one who got that opportunity to be able to go and face first with Sourav Ganguly? How did I get a chance to play in the first game, have the first opportunity to bat in such a huge tournament for world cricket? How was I even able to grab that opportunity? How much luck did I have along the way? Honestly, I don’t know the answers to any of these, but what I do know is that it changed my life forever.”

Bowling powerhouses bow to McCullum's brilliance

RCB had a formidable bowling lineup boasting the likes of Zaheer Khan, Jacques Kallis, and Praveen Kumar. However, even the best of bowlers found themselves struggling to contain the onslaught unleashed by Brendon McCullum during that historic match. The scoreboard kept ticking as McCullum's ferocious onslaught propelled KKR to a mammoth total of 222 runs, setting a daunting target for RCB to chase down.

Batting lineup falls short

RCB faced an uphill battle in their pursuit of KKR’s imposing total, especially with a batting lineup that lacked the firepower typically associated with T20 cricket. Despite the presence of experienced campaigners like Rahul Dravid, Wasim Jaffer, and Shivnarine Chanderpaul, RCB struggled to gain momentum throughout the match. In the end, RCB could only manage a meagre total of 82 runs, a far cry from the mammoth target set by KKR.

Sixteen years later, Kolkata Knight Riders is a franchise with two IPL trophies in its cabinet, but Royal Challengers Bengaluru, despite its line-up of star players every year, has yet to get its hands on the coveted domestic trophy. In fact, on March 29, 2024, RCB lost its eighth home game against KKR while winning only four against them at the M Chinnaswamy stadium.
