She’s not only a popular playback singer, but lately, has been a regular fixture on TV, thanks to her judging position on reality shows.

Indian playback singer Alka Yagnik was born on 20 March 1966, and we must say that she is considered to be one of the most renowned Female Playback Singers in India. She has worked with almost every record possible as a solo artist, apart from collaborating with well-known composers on the continent. She is often dubbed “the queen of playback singing”, and is now a regular fixture on TV too, thanks to her judging role in singing reality shows.

Record breaker

When it comes to award season, she has not only won the title of best female playback singer at the National Film Awards but also several IIFA Awards, Star Screen Awards, Zee Cine Awards. She has broken the record of the most awards won in the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer category, and also has the most nominations.

Singing since she was 6

Yagnik was born in Kolkata, and had an early introduction to music thanks to her mother, Shubha, who specialized in Indian classical music. By the age of six, Yagnik was already appearing on All India Radio, Calcutta. When she turned 10, her mother took her to Mumbai to introduce her to actor, producer and director Raj Kapoor, and then sent her for guidance under music director Laxmikant, who nurtured her talent.

Big break with ‘Ek Do Teen’

Although she witnessed minor success with songs for films like ‘Payal Ki Jhankaar’ (1980), ‘Laawaris’ (1981), and ‘Hamari Bahu Alka’ (1982), she witnessed huge success with her song “Ek Do Teen” from the film ‘Tezaab’ (1988). The track, featuring Madhuri Dixit, became phenomenally popular, and earned Yagnik a Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer.

She’s worked with several renowned composers in her career, including Laxmikant-Pyarelal (‘Coolie’, ‘Tezaab’, ‘Hum’, ‘Khalnayak’, ‘Khuda Gawah’, ‘Agneepath’ etc), Jatin Lalit, and Rajesh Roshan.
