London's Iconic Big Ben Falls Silent: Clock Dials Freeze, Chimes Cease in Westminster
At 12.55pm on Wednesday, the clock dials atop Elizabeth Tower in London experienced a brief stoppage.
Information
It has been revealed that time came to a halt in London on Wednesday.
During the incident, Big Ben, the renowned bell situated at the pinnacle of the 96-meter Elizabeth Tower in Westminster, remained silent as the clock dials temporarily ceased their movement.
At 12.55pm, the four clock dials positioned on each side of the tower within the Palace of Westminster, where Big Ben and four other bells are located, came to a stop, resulting in a silent toll at 1pm.
Witnesses reported that half an hour later, the clock hands were adjusted forward; however, the clock remained approximately five minutes behind schedule. It wasn't until 1.47pm that the hands were moved forward again to display the correct time.
“We are aware that the clock dials on the Elizabeth Tower were temporarily displaying the incorrect time on Wednesday afternoon,” a spokesperson for the House of Commons said. “Clock mechanics worked quickly to rectify the issue and the clock is now functioning as normal."
Big Ben's 5-Year Silence and Restoration
For a significant duration of five years, the imposing 13-tonne Big Ben bell remained mostly silent, coinciding with the extensive restoration work carried out on the Elizabeth Tower. The resumption of its distinctive "bongs" occurred in November 2022, marking a return to its regular service.
Controversy Over Chimes' Silence and Scaffolding
The decision to silence the chimes in 2017 was made to safeguard the hearing of the workers involved in the tower's restoration. However, this action drew significant criticism from senior Members of Parliament and then Prime Minister Theresa May. Following the suspension of the bells, scaffolding swiftly enveloped the tower, signifying the commencement of the restoration efforts.
