Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) secured 20th spot in the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) world university rankings by subject.
Over the years, Indian universities have made remarkable progress in education. The result is visible in recently publised QS ranking, as 69 Indian institutions featured in the top 500 list. The growth is astonishingly 19.4% higher than last year.
“One of the biggest challenges faced by India is educational – providing high-quality tertiary education in the face of exploding demand,” said QS CEO Jessica Turner.
In Asia, India is ranked second with 69 entries followed by China (101).
As India’s JNU achieved stupendous success in delivering quality education, the students from this university has contributed largely both nationally and internationally. In this article, we will discuss about some of the notable alumni of JNU who excelled in different fields.
Who doesn't know about India's growing relationship with numerous countries across the globe? This wouldn't be possible without the efforts of Foreign Secretary of India, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar. He is also one of the key advisors of Indian Prime Minister. He played a crucial role in negotiating the famous Indo-US civilian nuclear deal. Jaishankar completed his M.Phil and Ph.D from JNU.
The finance minister of India, Nirmala Sitharaman completed her Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in Economics M.Phil. from JNU, Delhi in 1984. Recently, she delivered the Union Budget for the fifth time.
There are some people, who are not so well known among public, but serve the country for greater cause. Indian Deputy National Security Advisor Arvind Gupta is one of them. He joined the National Security Council Secretariat in 1998. He worked there till 2007. Arvind Gupta has served in different capacities in Indian diplomatic missions in London, Moscow, and Ankara. He completed his Ph.D from JNU.
Mr. Khan served as Deputy Governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) during 2011-2016. Previously, he served as an Executive Director of RBI and Director of National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD). Harun Rashid Khan completed his M.Phil from JNU.
The professor of Economics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Abhijit Banerjee received Nobel prize in 2019. After completing his M.A. in Economics from JNU, Mr. Banerjee went to Harvard University for PhD. Being a part of expert panel set by United Nations Secretary General, he developed Millennium Development Goals.
An advocate of cutting-edge technologies to solve global problems, Ranjit Nayak, who was also a senior staff member of the World Bank, studied M.A in Sociology from JNU. Nayak is the founder of Austria based technology enterprise named megaOmega GmbH.
One of the pioneers of ‘Incredible India’ drive, and former CEO National Institution of Transforming India (NITI Ayog), Amitabh Kant completed his M.A. from JNU. He has a huge contribution in making Kerala as leading tourism state. Amitabh Kant played a crucial role in Make in India initiative.
Vineet Narain was the pioneer of investigative TV journalism in India, which started in 1980. One of his famous investigation was exposing Hawala network (Jain Hawala Case) in 1993. He is also an conservator of heritage. Vineet Narain completed his M.Phil from JNU.
