La Liga Sacks Six Referees Following the Vini-Valencia Fiasco

On Sunday, during the Real Madrid and Valencia game, Madrid’s Vini Junior claimed that he was racially abused by the Valencia fans.

La Liga came under fire once again following the alleged racial abuse of Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr. at the hands of Valencia fans on Valencia’s home ground. In the same game, given the situation, an emotional Vini confronted the ones who allegedly abused him racially. He also slapped Valencia’s Hugo Duro, for which he received his first La Liga red card.

After the game, Vini took to his social media account and blasted La Liga for its lack of action and also condemned the people who engage in racial abuse. After Vini’s outrage, La Liga fired six VAR referees, because of whom Vini was shown a red card.

La Liga’s report

In a report, the La Liga explained its decision by stating that the images given by the VAR referees to on-field referee De Burgos Bengoechea were incomplete and, therefore, Vini should not have received a red card. The La Liga officials further added, "They cannot find the reason why the sequence sent only referred to the Brazilian's blow to Hugo Duro's face and not to the rest of the play."

Real Madrid’s official statement

Post the racial abuse, Real Madrid took a stand for its player and released an official statement that read, "Real Madrid C. F. strongly condemns the events that took place yesterday against our player Vinícius Junior. These events represent a direct attack on the social and democratic model of coexistence of our State based on the rule of law."

The statement further read, "Real Madrid believes that such attacks also constitute a hate crime, and has therefore filed the corresponding report with the Attorney General's Office, specifically with the Prosecutor's Office against crimes of hatred and discrimination, in order for the facts to be investigated and for those responsible to be held accountable."
