Indian Wells: Stefanos Tsitsipas Eliminated After Falling to Jordan Thompson in the Second Round

Stefanos Tsitsipas, a Greek tennis player, lost to Jordan Thompson of Australia in the second round, and he was eliminated from Indian Wells. Tsitsipas' dreams of becoming the world's top player were dashed when he fell to Thompson in a 7-6(0), 4-6, 7-6(5) defeat.

Tsitsipas is eliminated from Indian Wells 

Stefanos Tsitsipas, a Greek tennis player, was eliminated from the Indian Wells tournament after falling to Jordan Thompson of Australia in the second round. The loss to Thompson (7-6(0), 4-6, 7-6(5)) ended Tsitsipas' aspirations of becoming the world's top player.

The injury to the second-seeded Tsitsipas, who had his shoulder taped, looked to have an impact on his backhand. Jordan beat the Australian Open runner-up in two hours and 37 minutes by taking advantage of Tsitsipas' injury.

After the match, Thompson said he was overcome with happiness after defeating Tsitsipas in round two, adding that the happiness was evident on his countenance.

"Tricky match point. The ball was only just out, and it was a relief that it went out. It was a great feeling. You could see it on my face at the end of the match. I was overcome with joy," said Thompson.

In advance: Ruud, Norrie, Sabalenka

In other matchups, Casper Ruud, the third seed, easily defeated Diego Schwartzman 6-2, 6-3. In the first set, Ruud jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead and saved the lone break chance on his serve with a forehand that grazed the line.

After the games, Ruud claimed that during his battle against Schwartzman, everything—including line shots and net cords—went his way. Currently, Ruud has a 4-5 record against Schwartzman.

"Everything sort of went my way. Early on, there were a couple of line shots and net cords that went my way, so I kind of felt that maybe today is my day," said Ruud.

In the meantime, qualifier Wu Tung-Lin of Taiwan was defeated by number 10 seed Cameron Norrie 6-2, 6-4, to progress to the third round.

"I have lots of good memories at Indian Wells. It's nice to be through to the third round," said Norrie.

Aryna Sabalenka, the number two player in the world and the most recent winner of the Australian Open, beat Evgeniya Rodina by scores of 6-2, 6-0, while Belinda Bencic fell to Jil Teichmann by scores of 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
