Indian batsmen with most runs vs England

Two legendary Mumbai batsmen, Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar, lead the list of Indians with the most runs against England in test cricket.

Sachin Tendulkar 2535

Sachin Tendulkar has scored the most runs against England in test cricket among Indian batsmen. He played his first test match against the rivals in 1990 while his last one came in 2012.

In the 53 innings of 32 matches against England in test cricket, Tendulkar scored 2535 runs at an average of over 50 including seven centuries, 13 half centuries and the best of 193. He struck 357 boundaries and 8 sixes against England in test cricket.

Overall, Sachin’s record as a test player is intimidating to say the least. The Little Master amassed over 15000 runs from 200 test matches at an average of 53.78 with 51 centuries and 68 half centuries in his test career.

Sunil Gavaskar 2483

Before Sachin Tendulkar overtook the original Little Master, Sunil Gavaskar was the highest run scorer among Indian batsmen against England in test cricket. He scored 2483 runs against England between 1971 and 1986. From 38 matches, Gavaskar averaged 38.20 against England with the best of 221. He struck 4 centuries and 16 centuries against the opposition.

Gavaskar became the first batsman to score 10000 runs in test cricket and finished his career with 10122 runs for 125 test matches at an average of 51.12 with 34 centuries and 45 half centuries.

Rahul Dravid 1950

Rahul Dravid inevitably makes the list, having scored just 50 runs shy of 2000 against England in test cricket. The first time Dravid faced England in test cricket was on his debut at Lord’s in 1996 when he fell agonisingly short of a maiden test century.

However, Dravid more than made up for it with a glorious career. He went on to amass over 13000 runs from 164 test matches at an average of 52.31 with 36 centuries and 63 half centuries. Dravid had the best of 217 against England and scored at an average in excess of 60, hitting 7 centuries and 8 half centuries against the opposition.

GundappaViswanath 1880

Iconic Indian batsman GundappaViswanath scored 1880 runs against England between 1971 and 1982 with the help of four centuries and 12 half centuries.

ViratKohli 1742 and DilipVengsarkar 1589 have been India’s other leading scorers against England in test cricket.
