Have you been dressing wrong? A proper guide to dress according to your body type

Trends change quickly, and it’s not always clear how to adapt them to our distinct (and lovely!) body forms.

Knowing how to dress for your body type is a game changer when it comes to creating a wardrobe you’ll adore. Understanding it not only makes getting dressed enjoyable and simple, but it also saves you time, money and sanity. Fashion is about feeling amazing in our favourite outfits and ourselves. However, you could say that we follow recommendations rather than regulations. So, here is a handy guide to teach you how to dress your body shape and highlight your best features with styles you already have (or should have) in your wardrobe but first things first: do you understand your boy shape?

Apple shaped

If your shoulders are wider than your hips, you are most likely apple-shaped. This body form is commonly known as the inverted triangle and is described as “top-heavy.” You will generally have broad shoulders, a big bust, and a straight waist. Women with this body shape tend to have slimmer legs, arms and hips. Good news! The world's most comfortable tops also look great on the classic Apple frame. Your power components include Relaxed A-line silhouettes, flowy tunics, relaxed boyfriend button-ups and V-necked anything. Try to add layers like jackets that can make a lot of difference. The apple-shaped body looks great in a coat, or vest that hit at the upper thigh or hip.

Pear shaped

You are pear-shaped if your hips are bigger than your breasts. This body type is the polar opposite of an apple body shape, with a heavier bottom than the top. Women with pear-shaped bodies typically have a distinct waist, full hips, and thin, m-sloping shoulders. Your physique is probably more curvaceous than straight, with a fuller back and stronger legs. Yes, it is quite understandable that comparing your physical shape to a fruit is not always optimal. So feel free to substitute the pear shape for a triangle, or simply embrace your curvier waist and hips. When it comes to bottom wear, go for bootcut and flare denim. Bootcut and traditional trousers fit elongated tiny figures. If you prefer flares, a floor-grazing fit over heels would do wonders!

Straight body

A straight body can be defined as having equal hips, waist and bust. This body type, often known as athletic or rectangular, is less curved than the pear or apple shapes. Instead, your silhouette seems pretty straight, with little visible curvature around your waist. Your physique is powerful, typically straight up and own, and it's a lot of fun to dress. Your figure looks amazing in practically everything; you may flaunt or conceal as much as you are comfortable with, and balance is easy to achieve. Starting from the top, you can always go for halter styles, scoop and round necklines, racerback styles and strapless anything. Want to add some curves to your waistline? Go for tops that can be tucked in. When it comes to bottoms, if you have chosen something oversized top, pick a skinny legging, jeans or structured trouser style.

Hourglass shape

If your hips and breasts are the same size, you most likely have an hourglass figure. This body type is characterised by curviness on both the top and bottom, as well as a pronounced waist-hence the name hourglass shape. Isn't it weird to believe that corsets were used to produce an hourglass figure in p[previous fashions? Wild. Your hourglass figure is the envy of nearly every woman. Anything V-neck, boat or round neck would go with hourglass and when it comes to bottoms stretchy skinny jeans leggings are best to flaunt your curves more prominently.

While you can wear whichever outfit you like, knowing your overall body type will help you choose clothes that suit your figure and make you feel more confident.
