Fruit Juice vs. Whole Fruit: Why the Latter Is the Healthier Choice

Fruit juice may have several negative impacts on your health.

Let’s admit it – we all love to drink at least one glass of fruit juice regularly at breakfast. It is refreshing and widely famed as a healthier alternative to other soft drinks. Also, it serves as a replacement for the whole fruit for many. However, in reality, it does a lot more harm to your health than good. As per several research studies, drinking fruit juice regularly can lead to a wide range of health issues with time. In some cases, it can even increase your risk of premature death.

It has fewer nutrients

Contrary to popular belief, fruit juice is not nutritionally equivalent to the whole fruit. In the juicing process, you eliminate the fruit’s pulp and skin which are rich in a variety of nutrients. As a result, the juice contains a much smaller number of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants when compared to the whole fruit. In particular, it lacks fiber which is very much required for the functioning of many organs in your body.

It is loaded with sugar

It may sound surprising, but fruit juice is exceptionally high in sugar. Classified as “natural sugar”, the content is even close to that of soda. On average, an 8-ounce can of fruit juice contains more than 40 grams of sugar. The canned juices are added with some extra sugar that is harmful to people of all age groups, especially children. So, avoid drinking fruit juice to cut down on your sugar intake.

It may contain harmful ingredients

Most of the fruit juices sold across the world are high in certain chemicals that are harmful to human health. These are added as preservatives, which also increase the taste as well as flavors of the product. Some juices even contain a rich amount of ethyl butyrate for the fragrance. A recent study has shown that canned juices are rich in some heavy metals like arsenic, lead, and cadmium.

It may cause obesity

While whole fruits help you lose some excess weight, the consumption of fruit juice is closely linked to weight gain. The lack of fiber and high-calorie content slows down your metabolic rate and leads you to obesity. So, if you are on a weight loss journey, stop drinking fruit juice right now.

It is linked to diabetes

Whole fruit contains fiber that restricts the absorption of sugar, thus reducing your risk of developing diabetes. On the other hand, due to the lack of fiber, the high amount of sugar present in the juice gets absorbed directly. If consumed regularly, it may lead you to type-2 diabetes in no time.

So, say a big no to the juice and switch to whole fruit instead.
