Crystal Palace Fires Manager Patrick Vieira After 20 Months in Charge

On Friday, Crystal Palace dismissed their manager Patrick Vieira after a 20-month tenure, following the team's 1-0 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion, leaving them with a slim three-point advantage above the relegation zone.

A disappointing season for Palace

On Friday, Crystal Palace dismissed their manager Patrick Vieira from his position after a 20-month tenure. The decision came following the team's 1-0 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion, which left them with only three points above the relegation zone.

As of 2023, Palace remains the sole Premier League team without a victory, having suffered six defeats and drawn five of their games. The team's most recent league triumph was on December 31, when they secured a 2-0 victory over Bournemouth. They are currently positioned in 12th place in the league standings, with 27 points and 11 games left to play.

Palace's official statement

"It is with enormous regret that this difficult decision has been made," Palace Chairman Steve Parish said.

"Results in recent months have placed us in a precarious league position, and we felt a change is necessary to give us the best chance of retaining Premier League status."

"That said, Patrick’s impact since joining us in the summer of 2021 has been significant, and he is held in the highest regard by myself, and all of his colleagues. He led the team to a Wembley FA Cup semi-final and a respectable 12th-place finish last season, playing some exciting football, which was a challenging and crucial campaign for the club given the changes we made to the squad prior to his arrival. Patrick has given his all to the club, and we all thank him and his team for their service", Parish further added.

Vieira's first season as manager

In July 2021, Patrick Vieira, a former French international who served as Arsenal's captain during three league title victories and four FA Cup triumphs, assumed the position of Crystal Palace's manager, succeeding Roy Hodgson. He was appointed on a three-year contract.

During Patrick Vieira's inaugural season as manager, Crystal Palace concluded their league campaign in the 12th position and advanced to the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

Other departees

Three members of Patrick’s coaching staff -- Osian Roberts, Kristian Wilson, and Saïd Aïgoun -- have also left the club.

The team has initiated the process of selecting a new manager and will provide an update at the appropriate time. It has been confirmed that Dean Kiely will continue in his role as goalkeeping coach.
