Asian U-20 Athletics Championship: Shot Put Athlete Siddharth Choudhary Wins Gold

The Asian Junior Athletics Championships are the Asian championships open to those of junior age.

India started their 2023 Asian U20 Athletics Championships campaign by winning a total of three medals, including two golds, on the opening day of the competition in Yecheon, South Korea.

Shot putter Siddharth Choudhary clinched India’s third gold of the Asian U-20 Athletics Championship here with a personal best throw of 19.52m on Monday.

Other achievers

Javelin thrower Shivam Lohakare (72.34m), men’s 3000m steeplechaser Sharuk Khan (8:51.74s) and long jumper Susmita (5.96m) won a silver medal each on the second day of competitions.

The 4x400m relay team (3:30.12s) and 800m runner Shakeel (1:49.79s) won a bronze each.

Fast-rising Rezoana Mallick Heena and Bharatpreet Singh had clinched a gold medal each in the women’s 400m race and the men’s discus throw, respectively, on the opening day on Sunday.

Bharatpreet Singh attained a distance of 55.66 metres with his third attempt to be crowned the men's U20 Asian Champion in the discus throw field.

Antima Pal won India’s third medal of the day, a bronze, in the women’s 5,000-metre race with a time of 17 minutes and 17.11 seconds.

Pal's tenacity and impressive performance added another accolade to India's successful day at the championship.

India's Bushra Khan Gauri finished fifth among the five runners in the women's 5000m, clocking 18:15.982s.

About the tournament

The 2023 Asian U20 Athletics Championships is the 20th edition of the international athletics competition for Asian under-20 athletes, organized by the Asian Athletics Association. Athletes born between 2004 and 2007 competed in 44 events, divided equally between the sexes. The competition took place over four days from June 4–7 at the Yecheon Stadium in Yecheon, South Korea.
