Argentina’s Martinez Auctions His World Cup Gloves for Cancer Patients

Martinez’s exploits helped Argentina win the 2022 FIFA World Cup, hosted by Qatar.

Emiliano Martinez may be a player whose actions on and off the field are often questioned or criticized. However, there is no doubt that he is a gem of a human with a golden heart. The goalkeeper who helped Argentina win the final game against France recently auctioned the gloves he wore during the game. The amount raised from the auction was given to a children’s cancer hospital.

Auction details

On Friday, the auction was held online, and Martinez participated in the auction from his home in England. The Dibu's gloves were auctioned for 45,000 US dollars. During the auction, Martinez said, "When they gave me the option to donate the World Cup gloves, I didn’t hesitate, it’s a good cause for the boys. The World Cup finals are not played every day; (the gloves) are special. But it helps a child much more than me having them hanging in a frame in my house."

In February, when the auction was announced, Martinez had signed the inside of the gloves. For the record, Martinez has proven to be a worthy goalkeeper for the Argentinian side. His ability to predict shots during penalty shootouts has helped him win crucial matches for Argentina, be it the 2022 World Cup or the 2021 Copa America.
