7 books that are going to be adapted into movies and shows in 2023

This year too will see a bunch of books being used for the visual medium, either as a movie or a TV show.

For a long time, you might have seen one of your favourite books coming to life on the big screen. With the popularity of books and literature, filmmakers too are turning to them for some inspiration and make them visually appealing on the screen.

In the recent past, there have been on-screen adaptations of several books including Women Talking, American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer, and Daisy Jones & The Six among others. And guess what? They also won critical acclaim, awards, and nominations.

Coming to the end of this year, too, there would be a series of books being used for a visual medium, either as a movie or a TV show. So, check out these titles before their upcoming book-to-screen release date.

1. Wicked by Gregory Maguire

For those caught unaware, Wicked is a revised view on the land of Oz (from The Wizard of Oz), its inhabitants, the wizards, and the Emerald City. The book, which was earlier adapted into an award-winning Broadway musical in 2003, will now be adapted into a two-part feature film, and it will reportedly feature Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Jeff Goldblum, and Michelle Yeoh.

2. Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus

The Sunday Times Bestseller talks about the life of Elizabeth Zott in the early 1960s and how her dream of being a scientist is challenged by the patriarchal society. So when Elizabeth finds out that she is pregnant, she is fired from her lab and ends up as a host on a TV cooking show. Albeit, she wants to return to her first love - science. The book is now being adapted into a mini-series with Brie Larson as the lead and executive producer. It will come out in October this year on Apple TV+

3. The Color Purple by Alice Walker

This 1982 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about the lives of African American women in the early twentieth century, in rural Georgia, was adapted on the big screen by Steven Spielberg in 1985. Now, there is all set to be a musical rendition of the novel which marks the debut of Fantasia Barrino. It will come out in December 2023.

4. Turtles All The Way Down by John Green

We all know John Green for The Fault in Our Stars. Now his 2017 novel, which follows a 16-year-old American high school student–suffering from OCD and anxiety, is being adapted into a film with Isabela Merced playing the lead character. It is set to release on HBO Max.

5. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins

If you liked the Hunger Games trilogy, check out this action-adventure prequel by the same author. Set 64 years before the first instalment, it depicts a young Coriolanus Snow and how he is so far away from the calculating dictator seen during the events of the original trilogy. While it stars Tom Blyth as Snow, the project also features Rachel Zegler, Josh Andrés Rivera, Hunter Schafer, Viola Davis, and Peter Dinklage.

6. The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe

First published in 1839, the gothic horror short story revolving around the themes of madness, family, isolation, is being adapted into a mini-series for Netflix by Mike Flanagan. It will star Rahul Kohli, Carla Gugino, Bruce Greenwood, Henry Thomas, T’Nia Miller, Kate Siegel and Mark Hamill, and will be released in October 2023.

7. Hallowe'en Party by Agatha Christie

The Agatha Christie novel is all set for the big screen by the name of A Haunting in Venice in September 2023. The murder mystery sees a retired Poirot solving the case after a guest at a séance he attends is killed. The film will star Kyle Allen, Camille Cottin, Jamie Dornan, Tina Fey, Jude Hill, Kelly Reilly, and Michelle Yeoh.
