6 new art shows in India you need to check out in the month of September

The selection of shows from this month in 2023 promises a celebration of all things creative.

We are almost entering the last quarter of the year and as we welcome the festive season, the shows in India are celebrating artists from diverse media. While creations by Indian artists Tejal Shah and Dayanita Singh feature in the 35th edition of the Sao Paulo Bienal, Delhi’s Akar Prakar gallery just launched It’s Personal!, which focuses on sound-based artists from South Asia.

The Arboreal Haven by Mayank Kumar Shyam at Inherited Arts Forum Gallery, New Delhi

India has witnessed indigenous creations from across the country over the years, and Gond art is one such creative form which was started on cave walls but has progressed to rich canvases today. This new exhibition gives a glimpse into the work of Mayank Kumar Shyam, who hails from the Gond Pardhan community in Madhya Pradesh, and his paintings pay homage to our natural world by celebrating trees and birds. Head to the Inherited Arts Forum Gallery, F 320, First Floor, Lado Sarai, New Delhi until 25th September 2023.

Delhi Contemporary Art Week at Bikaner House, New Delhi

The sixth edition of the Delhi Contemporary Art Week (DCAW) is all set to feature voices from South Asia represented by six top galleries of New Delhi. One can check out work from individual art spaces Blueprint12, Exhibit 320, Gallery Espace, Latitude 28, Shrine Empire and Vadehra Art Gallery. Check it out at Bikaner House, Pandara Flats, India Gate, New Delhi from 3rd to 7th September 2023.

A Place in The Sun: Women Artists from 20th Century India at DAG, Mumbai

Ambika Dhurandhar was India’s first formally trained female artist in a field dominated by men having been born in the 20th century. However, now India’s art landscape has changed and most women have their artistic language as vocal as the male artists. This exhibition depicts works of ten female artists of the 20th century who raised questions of feminism, gender, caste and class, folk art, abstraction or sculpting, via their work. One can check out the works of Zarina Hashmi, Devyani Krishna, Madhvi Parekh, Shobha Broota, Anupam Sud, Gogi Saroj Pal, Latika Katt, Mrinalini Mukherjee, Navjot Altaf and Rekha Rodwittiya, at DAG, The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Apollo Bunder, Mumbai from 9th September to 21st October 2023.

Which Sky Do Birds Fly at Latitude 28, New Delhi

Once in our lives, we all have questioned our identity and belonging. The latest exhibition, co-curated by Saloni Jaiwal and Manan Shah, focuses on these questions via diverse artistic media. Check it out at Latitude 28, F-208, First Floor, Lado Sarai, New Delhi until 15th October 2023.

In Between The Notes at Experimenter, Kolkata

This group exhibition features works by Biraaj Dodiya, Lala Rukh, Parul Thacker, Samson Young and Superhero Sighting Society, and highlights how what we listen is closely connected to what we actually ‘hear’. Check it out at the Experimenter, 45, Ballygunge Place, Ballygunge, Kolkata until 14th October 2023.

Stillness in Motion at Akara Modern, Mumbai

With our current fast-paced lives, it would not be wrong to say that most of us do not have time to sit still or enjoy moments of tranquillity for even a minute. This group exhibition includes works of famous names of modern art like Jeram Patel, Krishen Khanna, K.H. Ara, Reba Hore, M.F. Husain and Sudhir Patwardhan, best captures how busy moments can be altered to those of stillness in an instant. The exhibition is a juxtaposition of stillness and movement.
