Why we must celebrate World Earth day?

“World Earth Day”, participated by approximately one billion people, is considered as one of the largest movements or celebrations across the globe for the conservation of nature.

For the last 50 years,  people across the globe have been celebrated “Earth day” for spreading awareness about the protection of the environment. UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated that, “Mother Earth is clearly urging a call to action. Let’s remind more than ever on this International Mother Earth Day that we need a shift to a more sustainable economy that works for both people and the planet”. How did the celebration of “Earth day” start?

Understanding the importance of the natural surrounding environment, junior senator Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin,in 1969, wished to start a teach-in on educational campuses to educate pupils about the consequences of air and water pollution.Senator Nelson, along with Pete McCloskey, activist Denis Hayes organized teach-ins across the United States of America on April 22, 1970. Later, they announced that day to be considered as“Earth Day”. Nearly 20 million Americans walked the streets of America with the motive to “demonstrate against the impacts of 150 years of industrial development which had left a growing legacy of serious human health impacts”.

Significance of “World Earth Day”:

According to the United Nations, “World Earth Day”must be celebrated to remind everyone that “Mother Earth and ecosystems provide us with life and sustenance”. This is a day to understand the collective responsibility to promote harmony with the Earth to achieve a perfect balance among the social, economic, and environmental needs of the present and future generations.

Impact of celebrating “Earth day” globally:

There was a huge impact after the observance of the first Earth Day. It paved the way for the creation of the “Environmental Protection Agency”. It is a functional organization till now. They helped the formation of several important environmental laws. Some of the important laws are “The Clean Air Act”, “The Clean Water Act”, and so on. The idea of celebrating “Earth day” nowadays lies in educating every person about conservation, protesting against any climate change-related events and global warming, and encouraging them to become active volunteers for the good of the planet.

How can you celebrate “Earth day”?

The major goal of celebrating earth day is spreading awareness about the conservation of natural ecosystems. You can take part in this celebration in various ways, even from your home. You can take care of your surroundings by planting some trees or nurturing trees in your garden, educating yourself about reusing or recycling used products. You can also donate something for global conservation purposes.
