When Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals Take on Each Other

Both Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Delhi Capitals (DC), formerly known as Delhi Daredevils, are among the eight original IPL franchises when the tournament began in 2008, and hence have a lot of context attached to their rivalry

Since the inaugural IPL season in 2008, Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals have met 27 times. Interestingly, the rivalry boasts a near-perfect balance, with Rajasthan winning 14 matches and Delhi Capitals emerging victorious in 13. This close contest adds a layer of excitement to every encounter, keeping fans on the edge of their seats. Analysing further, Rajasthan has enjoyed a slight edge in the initial years, winning 7 out of their first 10 encounters. However, the tide seems to be turning with DC winning 7 out of their last 17 meetings.

Memorable Encounters: Turning Points in the Rivalry

The very first meeting between the two teams in 2008 showcased the competitive spirit that would define their rivalry. Delhi Capitals emerged triumphant by 9 wickets, but the Royals bounced back with a narrow 3-wicket win later that season, marking the beginning of a closely contested journey.

2008 Semi-Final: Royals Roar on the Big Stage

One of the most significant encounters in the RR vs DC rivalry came in the first semi-final of IPL 2008. Batting first, the Royals set a daunting target of 193 runs, with Shane Watson leading the charge with a quickfire 52. The DC chase faltered despite a fighting fifty from Gautam Gambhir, and the Royals secured a convincing 105-run victory, booking their place in the finals and ultimately, their maiden IPL title. This match not only cemented the Royals’ dominance early on but also highlighted their ability to perform under pressure.

2013 Encounters: Royals Reassert Their Supremacy

The 2013 season witnessed two thrilling encounters between RR and DC. The first match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi was a nail-biter, with the Royals edging past the Capitals by a mere 5 runs. However, the second meeting at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur proved to be a one-sided affair. Rajasthan Royals, fuelled by Ajinkya Rahane’s unbeaten 63, registered their biggest win against Delhi Capitals by 9 wickets.

Record-breaking Performances: Individual Brilliance

Several individual performances have illuminated the RR vs DC rivalry. Jos Buttler’s phenomenal 116-run knock for Rajasthan Royals in 2022 stands tall as the highest individual score by a Royals batsman against the Capitals. This innings showcased Buttler’s destructive power and his ability to single-handedly turn the tide of a match. On the bowling front, Shane Watson’s exceptional spell of 3/10 in the 2008 knock-out win against DC remains the best bowling display for the Royals. Watson’s all-round performance in that match, with both bat and ball, was instrumental in propelling the Royals to victory. For the Delhi Capitals, Mitchell Marsh’s aggressive 89 in 2022 and Pawan Negi’s impactful 4/18 in 2012 showcase their batting and bowling prowess against the Royals respectively.

Looking Ahead: A Rivalry Set to Continue

With both teams boasting a strong blend of young talent and experienced players, the RR vs DC rivalry is poised to continue captivating fans for seasons to come. The upcoming match on March 28th, 2024, at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium promises to be another nail-biting encounter. The Royals, on the back of a convincing win in their opening match, seem to hold the upper hand. However, the Capitals, with Rishabh Pant returning from injury and a determined middle-order, cannot be underestimated. This match presents an opportunity for both teams to rewrite the recent narrative and establish dominance in this historic rivalry.
