What Causes Dark Eye Lids? How to Get Rid of Them?

When the skin above the eyes is affected by hyperpigmentation, the eyelids become dark. This condition has many causes and can be caused by changes in the blood vessels, congenital disease, or even an eye injury. In some people, the eyelids may darken and dark spots may appear under the eyelids. Although they represent the same condition, both do not occur in all cases.

What Causes Dark Eyelids?

The main factors that cause dark eyelids are:

1- Presence of dilated blood vessels giving a dark appearance to the surrounding skin.

2- Pain or injury to the tissues near the eyes or eyelids causes the skin to darken.

3- Melanin is produced in excess, making the eyelids look very dull and dark due to hyperpigmentation.

4- Prolonged exposure to the sun causes UV rays to damage skin cells, causing age spots, freckles, and darkening of the eyelids.

5- Inflammatory diseases such as dermatitis, allergies, chronic sinusitis, and rheumatoid arthritis can cause swelling and discoloration of the skin.
