Despite the presence of 20 teams and 300 players, including some of the biggest stars in the world of cricket, we believe some of these records will remain intact in the 2026 edition
The ICC T20 World Cup is currently underway, with even the emerging nations engaging in fierce competition against the seasoned cricketers. We, the spectators, have already witnessed some fine performances with the bat and the ball. However, despite the presence of 20 teams and 300 players, including some of the biggest stars in the world of cricket, we believe some records in the tournament’s history are unlikely to get shattered in the ongoing tourney.
Explore these unbreakable records in the ensuing paragraphs.
Fastest fifty
19 years ago, Yuvraj Singh had scored a fifty in 12 balls, a record that remains intact even today. Indeed, the game has evolved, and batters score sixes at will. However, the second fifty in the lowest number of balls in the tournament history stands at 17, which shows a massive gap. Therefore, we believe no player will be able to break this iconic record that belongs to Singh.
A six-for
In a T20 match where one bowler gets a maximum of four overs, it is impossible to get three-wicket hauls, and four- or five-wicket hauls are a daydream. However, in 2012, Ajantha Mendis dominated the game by taking six wickets and conceding only eight runs against Zimbabwe. Yes, one can argue that Zimbabwe batters were weak, and today, there are several minnow teams playing, but getting six wickets in one game for a single bowler is an incredibly tough task to achieve.
Most runs in the tourney
When it comes to most runs scored in the tournament’s history, Virat Kohli stands tall with 1,292 runs in 35 matches. The only active player who is playing the World Cup is Jos Buttler, with 1,039 runs, sitting close to Kohli’s record. However, in a tournament characterised by limited balls and rapid wicket losses, Buttler may find it challenging to score the necessary 253 runs.
Maximum T20 wickets
At the moment, Shakib Al Hasan’s record of 50 wickets stands at the top in the tourney. However, Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga has closed in on Hasan with his 40 scalps in 20 matches. Will Hasaranga break the records? Many believe he will surpass the record of Hasan, but in our books of thoughts, Sri Lanka’s journey will end at the Super 8 stage, and therefore, Hasaranga only has four matches in his hand to break the record.
Most number of sixes
Finally, this is another record that we feel will stay intact. Retired West Indies player Chris Gayle holds the record of hitting 63 sixes, the maximum by a player in the tournament’s history. At present, Buttler stands at 43 and is 20 short. Even though the English batter is an explosive hitter, we do not think Buttler will surpass Gayle’s record.
