At the Eden Gardens, several new records were created, whereas old records were shattered
The Men in Blue are through to the semi-final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 after a brilliant chase, thanks to Sanju Samson’s unbeaten 97 that lit the Eden Gardens on fire. The night obviously became all about Samson’s terrific batting, but the game saw the creation of several new records.
In the following paragraphs, check out the new page in the record books of cricket.

By chasing 196 runs against the West Indies, India recorded its highest successful run chase ever in the tournament’s history. The Men in Blue never chased 180 or 190 runs, but their last highest successful run chase was 173 against South Africa in Mirpur.

Sanju Samson’s 97 not only pushed India into the semi-final of the T20 World Cup but also broke a record many may have missed. Samson’s 97 now stands as the highest score for an Indian player in a successful chase, surpassing Virat Kohli’s 82 runs against Australia in 2016. Not to forget, he also surpassed the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav to become India’s second-highest individual run scorer in the T20 World Cup, sitting below Suresh Raina’s 101 runs.
Most sixes in an edition
Shimron Hetmyer should bat at No. 3 for the West Indies in the T20 World Cup. He is excellent at playing spin, so batting him higher up allows him to dominate the middle overs and control the game."#Hetmyer #T20WorldCup #SAvsWI pic.twitter.com/NycKpYvqrp

Although the West Indies lost the game, Shimron Hetmyer emerged from the tournament with a record. The brilliant hitter has hit 19 sixes in the tournament so far, making him the player with the maximum sixes scored in a single edition of the tourney. No player comes close from the four teams in the semi-final, so we believe the tournament will end with Hetmyer’s record intact.
The tournament will continue with India taking on England at the Wankhede Stadium, whereas South Africa and New Zealand will clash against each other at the Eden Gardens.
