'Speed' Accidentally Spends INR 1.3 Cr on Virtual Hat in Gaming

The teenager experienced an online meltdown after seemingly accidentally purchasing a virtual fedora on a gaming platform for an astonishing amount of $125,000 (INR 1.3 crore).

Darren Watkins Jr., also known by his online aliases ShowSpeed or Speed, is an American streamer and internet personality who has amassed a substantial following on various platforms. The 18-year-old is recognised for his eccentric and occasionally shocking behaviour during live streams, which has contributed to his immense popularity. It's highly likely that you'll come across one of his FIFA pack reaction videos while browsing through reels or scrolling through your social media feeds.

However, recently, the teenager experienced an online meltdown when it appeared that he accidentally purchased a virtual Fedora on a gaming platform for an astounding $125,000 (INR 1.3 crore). A video clip shared on Twitter by Dexerto captured the popular streamer's reaction as he realised he had paid such a hefty amount for a limited item called the Midnight Blue Sparkle Time Fedora on Roblox. In the clip, Watkins can be seen repeatedly exclaiming "no" and expressing his need for a refund after receiving a confirmation pop-up from the online gaming platform.

Although it remains unclear whether the incident was genuine or staged, it has left social media users amused and entertained.

A user wrote, "Holy f**k bro became one of the richest robloxians by value just by buying this".

"This is the dumbest rich guy ever," another wrote.

Speed's profile and recent controversy

Speed, primarily known for posting gaming content on his streams, rose to prominence in 2021 and 2022, earning him the title of Breakout Streamer of the Year at the 12th Streamy Awards. However, in December 2021, he found himself embroiled in controversy when he participated in the Twitch "e-dating" livestream show hosted by Adin Ross.

During the stream, an exchange between Speed and another participant named Ask Kash took a troubling turn and was widely interpreted as a rape threat. The incident sparked outrage and generated significant attention in the online community.

The Roblox platform, where Speed accidentally made the hefty payment for the virtual hat, often becomes the subject of viral headlines. Notably, in 2013, the platform gained significant attention when a 10-year-old child made purchases worth approximately £2500 from her mother's Roblox account, drawing attention to the potential risks associated with in-app purchases.
