Singapore Smash 2023: Manika Batra’s Crash Cuts Short India’s Journey

Singapore Smash is one of the world's highly anticipated table tennis tournament. The 2023 edition is being hosted at OCBC Arena from March 11 to March 19.

Manika Batra lost Tuesday's women's doubles and mixed doubles ties with her partner. Hence, this ended India's campaign at the Singapore Smash table tennis competition.

Brief Detail about the match

In the quarterfinals of the mixed doubles competition, Manika and Sathiyan Gnanasekaran fell to the Japanese team of Hina Hayata and Tomokazu Harimoto, silver medalists in the world championships.

They were deafetaed 2-3 (9-11, 9-11, 11-8, 11-5, 7-11) by their fourth-seeded opponents in the quarterfinals match. Th game lasted for almost 52 minutes.

Other Defeats Suffered by Indian Players

Previously, in their round of 16 mixed doubles match, Manika and Sathiyan had won 3-1 (11-7, 12-10, 9-11, 11-3) over the Singaporean team of Jian Zeng and Chew Zhe Yu Clarence. They had a bye in the opening round.

Manika and Archana Kamath lost to Meng Chen and Yidi Wang of China 2-3 (2-11, 6-11, 15-13, 12-10, 6-11) in a tightly fought round 9f 16 tie.

In the opening round of their respective singles bouts, Manika, Sathiyan, and Sharath Kamal had all lost.

Harmeet Desai and Manav Thakkar were also eliminated in the first round of the men's doubles competition.
