The Pentagon has awarded its multi-billion dollar Cloud-computing contract to all the major players -- Amazon, Google, Microsoft and Oracle -- which could amount to $9 billion in total up until 2028.
In order to put an end to the brutal cloud computing conflict, the Pentagon has given its $9 billion cloud computing contract to all the main players: Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Oracle.
Pentagonstatement on Wednesday
"No funds are being obligated at the time of award; funds will be obligated on individual orders as they are issued. The purpose of this contract is to provide the Department of Defense with enterprise-wide, globally available cloud services across all security domains and classification levels, from the strategic level to the tactical edge," Pentagon said in a statement on Wednesday.
A new cloud initiative
The Pentagon last year announced a new cloud initiative to replace the doomed JEDI contract, which saw a bitter battle over its $10 billion JEDI (Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure) Cloud computing contract.
The $10 billion JEDI contract awarded to Microsoft in 2019 had to be cancelled by the Pentagon, eliminating the front-runner Amazon from the competition during the Donald Trump administration.
The JWCC Cloud contract requested bids from all of the major cloud providers, including Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and Oracle.
Pentagonstatementin November last year
"The government anticipates awarding two contracts -- one to Amazon Web Services AWS) and one to Microsoft Corporation (Microsoft) -- but intends to award to all Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) that demonstrate the capability to meet DoD's requirements," the Pentagon had said in a statement in November last year.
JEDI contract
For services provided over a ten-year period, the JEDI contract was designed to modernise the Pentagon's IT systems. AWS had submitted a bid appeal to DoD directly after Microsoft was given the ten-year contract in October 2019, contesting the choice.
Amazon thought that the reevaluation process was seriously faulty and that Donald Trump, a former US president, had exerted unfair pressure on it.
