On This Day (Apr. 30): Chahal Enters Elite Group of IPL Bowlers With His Second Hattrick

Chahal is one of the three players in the history of the IPL to have a hattrick

The Indian Premier League (IPL) was inaugurated in 2008, and surprisingly, in 18 years of the tournament, only three players have managed to take two hat-tricks. In fact, it was only last year when Yuzvendra Chahal entered an elite group of IPL bowlers by dismantling several Chennai batters in a game between the Punjab Kings (PBKS) and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Let’s revisit Chahal’s heroics from this day in 2025.

CSK’s run for 200

Batting first, CSK had lost their opening duo, but then came Sam Curran, who slowly built an innings and gave his team the much-needed stability. Curran single-handedly scored 88 runs, and by the time he left the crease, CSK was at 172/5 in 17.4 overs. Even Dewald Brevis had scored 32 runs, putting CSK on track to score past 200.

However, that’s when Shreyas Iyer brought in Chahal for the 19th over to ensure CSK feels 20-30 runs short.

Chahal’s magic

Against Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Chahal started with a wide followed by a maximum from Dhoni down the ground in the first legal delivery – Iyer had started to question his decision, but in the second ball, Chahal sent Dhoni back to the crease at 11 runs, and that was just the beginning.

Then came Deepak Hooda, who also tried an aerial shot but landed in the hands of Priyansh Arya, followed by Anshul Kamboj, who was sent home for a duck. Noor Ahmad also fell prey to Chahal’s deceptive bowling and went for a big shot, but a poor connection meant he, too, got caught.

Chahal stopped CSK from reaching 200 runs and became the first IPL bowler to grab a hat-trick against CSK.

No Man of the Match

Despite Chahal’s hat-trick, he did not receive the Man of the Match award. Instead, Shreyas Iyer grabbed the award for scoring 72 runs in 41 balls at a strike rate of 175.61, which included five boundaries and four sixes. The captain’s knock helped Punjab Kings chase down the target in 19.4 overs.

Chahal’s tactics

In a post-match chat with skipper Shreyas Iyer posted on the IPL website, Chahal explained his tactics and mentality, stating, “I knew Mahi bhai (MS Dhoni) was there, and so was (Shivam) Dube. But I had a feeling I'd get a wicket in that over. I didn't worry about being hit for sixes; I just focused on giving my best and kept changing my lines. I knew once the pacers finished their quotas, I'd be bowling the 19th or 20th over, so I planned accordingly. I noticed the pacers' slower balls were gripping slightly and not coming onto the bat.”

Before the hattrick against CSK, Chahal’s first in the IPL was against the Kolkata Knight Riders, which saw him grab four wickets while giving away 28 runs.
