Olympic Medallist Saina Nehwal Pulls out From All England Badminton Championship 2023

The Indonesian star pair of Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo also withdrew from the doubles format.

Star athlete Saina Nehwal, winner of bronze at the Olympics and previous runner-up in the All England Championship, decided not to play in the upcoming edition of the highly prestigious tournament.

Other notable withdrawals

The reason behind Saina's withdrawal is still unclear, as no official cause was given. Singapore’s Yeo Jia Min replaced her in the tournament.

Sukamuljo withdrew from the 2023 All-England Championship due to health reasons. That is why Indian top seed Satwik-Chirag, who were scheduled to face them, will play against fellow countrymen Krishna Prasad Garaga and Vishnuvardhan Goud Panjala in the tournament's opening round. Satwik-Chirag had failed to beat Gideon-Sakamuljo in all 11 of the previous meetings.

Man Wei Chong and Kai Wun Tee from Malaysia withdrew from the men's doubles competition as well; they were replaced by Ronan Labar and Lucas Corvee from France.

India's record at the All-England Badminton Championship

Only two Indians have ever captured the coveted All England Championship: Prakash Padukone in 1980 and Pullela Gopichand in 2001. Prakash Nath, Saina, and Lakshya Sen, three Indians, have all nearly won but lost in the final.
