Meet Riddhi Sen, The National Award-Winning Bengali Actor Working In Anurag Kashyap's Next

According to reports, the yet-to-be-titled film is based on a true story.

"... this is immensely humbling, a dream named 'cinema' coming true," said Sen about working in Anurag Kashyap's film.

It was earlier announced that filmmaker Anurag Kashyap is working on his next film which stars Bobby Deol as the lead. Of course, it's an Anurag Kashyap film, and so there's loads of excitement naturally, not to mention the presence of Deol who is everyone's new favorite. However, what makes the whole thing even better is that it also stars Riddhi Sen, a national award-winning actor from Bengal.

Well, it's definitely a unique collaboration that we didn't know we wanted to see. And given the remarkable (and 'distinct') vision of Kashyap and the stellar acting chops of Sen, this is something to keep an eye on for sure! Besides Sen and Deol, the upcoming film will also feature Sanya Malhotra, Saba Azad, Joju George, Sapna Pabbi, Jeetendra Joshi, Ankush Gedambe, Nagesh Bhonsle, Jamini Pathak, and Ghamshyam Garg among others.

The Theatre Background

Riddhi Sen is the son of Kaushik Sen and Reshmi Sen, and grandson of Shyamal Sen and Chitra Sen; all are stalwarts of Bengali theatre.

Born on May 19, 1998, Sen has been performing on stage ever since the age of four. He is a regular actor in the theatre group 'Swapnasandhani', and has been a part of numerous successful productions including 'Taraye Taraye', 'Dakghor', 'Macbeth', 'Ashwathama', and 'Hamlet' among others. And he has received many accolades for his performances in various plays.

Bengali Cinema – The Unprecedented Critical Acclaim

The actor's debut as a lead came with the 2015 film, 'Open Tee Bioscope'. The film is a coming-of-age story of an adolescent boy and his friends in Kolkata, and Sen's performance as Fowara is the major highlight here. He captured the essence of adolescence perfectly in his performance, resonating with one and all. It was evident that this boy would go on to achieve only great things.

He went on to star in several films along the way, including 'Loadshedding', 'Samantaral', 'Nagarkirtan', 'Anusandhan', 'Bismillah', and 'Bogla Mama Jug Jug Jiyo' among others. On the other hand, he has several web series to his name as well, such as 'Feluda', 'Panch Phoron', 'Sharate Aaj', 'Boyfriends and Girlfriends', and 'Sundarbaner Vidyasagar'. Each of his performances earned him enormous acclaim from both critics and audiences alike.

The National Award & Other Accolades

Sen is no stranger to awards, however, the biggest achievement in his career came in 2018 when he won the National Film Award for Best Actor for his performance in Kaushik Ganguly’s 'Nagarkirtan'. He was 19 years old back then, thus becoming the youngest recipient of the coveted award. And if you have seen the film, you know it was absolutely well deserved!

Speaking about achieving such a remarkable feat, Sen shared in an interview, "I don’t know if I am really the youngest. But I must be the happiest. I made no effort to win it. The honor has come to me on its own and I therefore feel happy about it. I was shooting for a film when I was informed that I had won a National award. So, I celebrated in the best way possible, by working."

Bollywood And More

Even before making his debut with 'Open Tee Bioscope', Sen appeared in a short role in Sujoy Ghosh's thriller, 'Kahaani'. Later, in 2015, he appeared as Gulab in 'Parched', and received loads of praise from critics. In 2018, he appeared alongside Kajol in 'Helicopter Eela', receiving further acclaim. On the other hand, he has acted in the war drama film, 'Children of War'.
