In the history of Indian entrepreneurship, few stories are as inspiring and emblematic as the journey of Lijjat Papad. A brand that today stands synonymous with taste, trust, and impeccable quality, Lijjat’s inception is a tale of resilience, vision, and an unwavering belief in one’s capabilities.
In a world where women predominantly played the role of homemakers, seven Gujarati women in 1959 chose to break the norm. They crafted a brand treasured globally, making papad – a crispy Indian staple snack, now enjoyed in numerous countries.
India's vast history and rich culture have fostered businesses that bloom from modest starts into industry leaders. Among these tales is the inspiring story of these women whose venture, with the noble intent of empowering fellow women, transformed into a leading FMCG giant.
The year was 1959. In a humble neighbourhood of Girgaon in Mumbai, seven women came together with a shared vision – to create a means of livelihood that was both sustainable and respectful. The women – Jaswantiben Jamnadas Popat, Ujamben Narandas Kundalia, Chutadben Amish Gawadem, Parvatiben Ramdas Thodani, Banuben. N. Tanna, Jayaben V. Vithalani, and Laguben G. Chheda – each brought their unique strengths to the table. But what united them was their collective ambition.
Shri Mahila Griha Udyog Lijjat Papad, colloquially known as Lijjat, is a testament to women's empowerment. Initiated in 1959 in Mumbai with a mere Rs. 80, its 2019 revenue skyrocketed to over Rs. 1600 crore. The women started by making a few papad packs on a terrace and selling them locally. Their determination was unwavering – they never sought financial aid, even during hard times. Their endeavours soon scaled, with the addition of more women and essential business tools.
Today, Lijjat boasts 82 branches sprawled across 17 Indian states. The company, with the support of merchant exporters, reaches over 25 countries with its products, from the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Italy, to the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Japan, Canada, Australia, and South Africa.
More importantly, it has empowered thousands of women, providing them not just with a source of income, but also a sense of self-worth and independence.
Lijjat Papad’s journey is a testament to the power of collective vision, unwavering dedication, and the belief that quality and integrity are the cornerstones of any successful venture. It underscores the idea that with grit and determination, even the most modest beginnings can translate into monumental success stories.
More than just a brand, Lijjat is a movement. It exemplifies women’s empowerment and shows that when women come together with a shared purpose, they can surmount the steepest challenges and carve out legacies that endure for generations.
Lijjat’s growth is often viewed against the backdrop of women’s liberation. The organization continually pushes its members and their families toward digital literacy and education. A notable figure among the founders, Jaswantiben Jamnadas Popat was honored with the prestigious Padma Shri award in 2021.
Lijjat stands as a testament to the strength and vision of women. Their legacy, firmly rooted in empowerment, continues to inspire and resonate in every papad crunch. A tale of legends, indeed.
