Kosher Salt-Why It Should Replace Ordinary Salt In Your Diet

The brief description of all edible salts with their nutrition index, and why you should keep kosher salt a priority while cooking.

Something that adds flavour to the blandest of foods, your kitchen counter can’t positively work without a jar of salt. The more refined version would be sea salt that has caught health enthusiasts' attention due to the less processing. Before you put a large packet of it in your shopping cart, here is all you know about the variety of salt and why you should prefer it over the white salt in your salt shaker.

  • Sea Salt-
The most commonly available of all salts is sea salt. As its name suggests, it is derived by evaporation of seawater. It is less processed and contains more nutrients. The minerals like magnesium, calcium and potassium are present that make it even whiter. They are added to processed foods to make them preserve longer. Recent research with unprocessed sea salt concluded retention of tiny particles of plastic in the salt due to the increased contamination of sea beds. The debris can have long term health perils on the people consuming it.
  • Himalayan Salt-
The pink salt that catches your eye on the salt aisle is the Himalayan salt. Mined from the Himalayan rocks, it retains the blush colour from large copper, potassium, and magnesium concentration. You won't get your tongue burnt if you had a pinch of salt on your tongue, and having a glass of water with a spoon of Himalayan salt can help you cure gastric ailments.
  • Table Salt-
Derived from salt mines, it is like all processed foods stripped off its natural nutrients. The one good thing about it is the addition of iodine that prevents goitre from building in your thyroid gland. It is common and is the one used in every household.
  • Kosher Salt-
Now for the main discussion, what good does kosher salt do? Kosher salt is the in-between of the more processed version of sea salt and coarser than table salt. It is easy to grab and retains the natural properties and minerals.

Salts overall affect your blood pressure and heart, and the size of the flakes is all that makes the difference. A spoon of kosher and Himalayan takes more space than the processed ones. You may want to cut down on salt to keep your BP maintained, but there is no denying that salt makes every food taste better!
