Korean Remake of 'Drishyam' Confirmed with Song Kang-Ho from 'Parasite' as Lead

The original Malayalam version of Drishyam had Mohanlal in the title role.

With an official Korean adaptation, Ajay Devgn's Drishyam will go international. Anthology Studios, a South Korean production company, and Panorama Studios, who created Drishyam, have established a partnership for the adaptation of the thriller series. The studious at the 76th Cannes Film Festival's India Pavilion officially announced the news.

Speaking to the portal about the upcoming collaboration, Panorama Studios’ Kumar Mangat Pathak said that he was very excited about the Korean remake of the successful franchise. “This will not only increase its reach outside India but will also put Hindi cinema on the global map. All these years, we have been inspired by Korean fare, now they have found a muse in one of our films,” he was quoted as saying.

Jay Choi, from the Anthology Studios, expressed excitement to make this successful film with some touches of Korean cinema traits. “The remake has greater significance as the first major co-production between Korea and India. Through our partnership, we will be able to bring the best of both Indian and Korean cinema and make a meaningful remake that is as excellent as the original,” he said.

First-Ever Partnership

The first-ever partnership between an Indian and a Korean film studio would take place with this remake of Drishyam. It will also be the first Indian movie to be formally remade in the language. Aside from that, this production also involves Parasite award-winning actor Song Kang-ho and Cobweb director Kim Jee-woon. According to a source on Deadline, the first film in this remake is expected to start filming early next year.

Panorama Studios Expanding Remake Ventures in US and Japan

Jack Nguyen, a producer based in the US, will serve as executive producer of the Korean version of Drishyam. According to the article, Panorama Studios is also preparing to recreate other foreign films in the US and Japan. Sheep Without A Shepherd, a Chinese version of the movie, was produced in 2019 by China Film Group.

Hindi Remake of Drishyam

Drishyam series, which had Mohanlal as the protagonist and was first produced in Malayalam, captured the attention of the audience and was then translated into numerous Indian languages. The original movie was directed by Jeethu Joseph. Produced by Panorama Studios and Viacom 18 Motion Pictures, the Drishyam remake is in Hindi. Ajay Devgan, Tabu, Shriya Saran, and Ishita Dutta were among the actors who starred in it. The first installment was released in 2015, and the second one was released in 2022.
